The largest part of the overall Patriot Project is
Banner Student. This portion of the project is tasked with converting the
Student Information System to SCT Corporation's Banner software. The Banner Student
project started June 26, 2002 and will take approximately two years to complete.
Banner Student will allow students, faculty, and advisors to conduct much of their
administrative business from standard web browsers. Students will be able to apply to
the university, register for classes and pay their bills online. Faculty will be able
to post grades online and view their schedules, class lists, and wait lists. Faculty
and advisors with appropriate security will be able to view student information and
student schedules and implement registration overrides.

Important Dates for Patriot Web (Banner Self-Service):
- Week of February 23, 2004 -
- Students will be told how to get their G-number and PIN in order to access
Patriot Web.
- March 1, 2004 -
- Financial Aid go-live; students can check the status of 2004-05 financial aid
applications.
- Week of March 22, 2004 -
- 2004 Schedule of Classes available on-line.
- April 15, 2004 -
- Priority Web Registration for Fall 2004 begins.
Banner Student Liaisons
Liaisons have been identified throughout the campus community. These individuals will
receive information via e-mail during the week of February 23, 2004 regarding the
process of getting access to the system for individuals in their units.
Banner Student Interim Milestones
The Banner Student project is preparing for full implementation for the fall 2004
semester. In the meantime, it has produced some interim milestones that bring us
closer to that goal in the following areas:
- Online undergraduate application.
The online undergraduate application has enabled more than 3,400 individuals to apply to Mason
on the web. The Banner application represents a step forward for undergraduate applicants, who
for the first time are able to save the application in progress and return to it at a later time.
- Conversion of basic biographic/demographic data.
We've converted basic biographic and demographic data for over 300,000 student records from SIS.
This is the first step in the conversion of student records from the Student Information System.
- Conversion of courses.
The Registrar's Office has completed the conversion of all catalog data into Banner. Effective
with the fall 2004 semester, students will access the online catalog through the Patriot Web
(Mason's self-service site for faculty, students, and staff) rather than WebGMU.
- Self-Service for Faculty and Advisors.
A group of faculty and advisors reviewed Banner's Self-Service for Faculty and Advisors product
and determined that it meets the majority of their needs. When the product is integrated into
the Patriot Web, faculty will be able to access class schedules and rosters and detailed
information about their students. Advisors will be able to view student schedules and run
degree audits on the web.
- Masking sensitive data.
The university is required to collect the Social Security Number of all employees and of all
students who apply for financial aid. Faculty asked the Banner Student Steering Committee to
develop a mechanism to protect against inappropriate access to this and other sensitive
information in Banner. In response, the implementation team will develop and maintain a
modification that will mask portions of the Social Security Number and birth date of all
employees and students displayed in general searches.
- G Number.
Using the G Number as the primary identifier for students and employees rather than the Social
Security Number allows us to better protect the privacy of our students and employees.
- Interfaces.
More than a dozen offices throughout the university have installed computer applications that
currently require information from SIS. Implementation teams are working with them to develop
interfaces with and data extracts from Banner to ensure that users will be able to continue to
use their office systems.
