Accessible Library Services

General Information

All University Libraries provide reasonable accommodations to patrons with special needs. Upon request, arrangements can be made to assist users with locating and retrieving materials, photocopying or other services.

Assistive Technology Services

Assistive Technology Equipment and software applications are available for library patrons on the Fairfax, Prince William and Arlington Campuses of George Mason University.

The assistive technology (AT) rooms have been established for all patrons requiring accommodations to access library materials and services. They are locked for security purposes and to maintain their availability to patrons who need to use the equipment. Please ask a library worker for assistance in entering the room. Codes for entry into the Johnson Center AT room are provided to students registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS).

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Video Magnifier

A video magnifier is a device that uses closed circuit television technology to enlarge written materials and small objects.

 

Dragon Dictate Naturally Speaking

Dictate is voice recognition software. It allows users to talk into a microphone and have their words entered into the computer. It can also control all mouse and keyboard functions through voice commands to provide hands-free access to those individuals with significant physical limitations.

Jaws for Windows

JAWS for Windows is a screen reading software for computers running any Windows operating system. It reads the information that is on the screen to benefit those users who cannot see the screen. All information including menu bars, text in word processors and information found in dialog boxes is provided through speech output.

Text Help Read and Write

Text Help Read and Write is a program that is designed for people with severe learning disabilities or dyslexia. It has many tools including a talking spell checker, text to speech capabilities and word prediction. TextHelp Read and Write works in conjunction with all software loaded on the computer. When the software is running, a toolbar will be displayed on the screen.

WYNN Wizard

WINN Wizard is a document reading system that consists of optical character recognition software (OCR), a scanner and a software speech synthesizer. It allows the user to scan hard copy documents and have them read out loud by the computer. It has a built-in dictionary and thesaurus. It also allows the user to read and highlight text as well as record auditory notes.

ZoomText Xtra

ZoomText Xtra is a software program that enlarges the screen image up to 16X its typical size. It also provides limited screen reading capabilities.
