The Assistive Technology Initiative is a joint project of the Office of Equity and Diversity Services, the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human Disability, and the Office of Disability Services. Initiative staff provides assistive technology assessments for students and staff, train ATI clients in the use of adaptive technology, provide technical assistance and training to university employees on various aspects of making and keeping technology accessible, and manage the production of accessible text for students and employees. The Kellar Institute operates the Assistive Technology Lab where students are trained in the uses of assistive technology.

The Mission of the ATI is to provide an accessible academic environment through the use of assistive technology and to ensure that all of the technology resources available at Mason are accessible to people with disabilities.

What is Assistive Technology? |
Assistive Technology is any item that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a disability.
Examples:
- Software that provides a visual representation of outlined information for individuals with learning disabilities.
- An alternative keyboard for people with a physical disability such as quadriplegia.
- Screen reading software for individuals with a vision impairment.
