What is Section 508?

  • Section 508 is an Amendment to the Rehabilitation Act. It requires Federal agencies amd agencies receiving federal funds to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. This includes but is not limited to Web-based information systems. For more complete information on Section 508 visit www.section508.gov

  • Section 508 requires that all web sites that are federally funded be accessible according to standards specified in the legislation. The Section 508 Web Accessibility Standards are measurable and in most cases easy to implement.

  • George Mason University is a state school that receives federal flow-through money. Therefore official Mason web sites should be accessible in accordance with Section 508. In addition, if students are required to access the web for class assignments, the websites they access must be accessible. If it is not possible to make the sites accessible then the information on that website must be provided in an alternative accessible format. (In accordance with the American's with Disabilities Act).
