FROM NEW YORK TO TEXAS AND FLORIDA TO WISCONSIN, MASON ALUMNI around the country gathered together to cheer on their Mason Patriots as they defeated the Michigan State Spartans (75-65), the North Carolina Tarheels (65-60), the Wichita State Shockers (63-55), the Connecticut Huskies (86-84), and ultimately losing to the Florida Gators (73-58) in this year's NCAA Tournament.

THE CENTER FOR HISTORY AND NEW MEDIA has just gone live with their latest project: "The Mason Basketball Digital Memory Bank" at hoops.gmu.edu. Like previous Memory Banks (9/11 and Hurricane Katrina), this site allows the user to become a part of history by contributing their stories and experiences and by uploading their photos, videos, and audio files. THE BLACK ALUMNI CHAPTER will be hosting two upcoming events that alumni are invited to attend. On April 29, the Black Alumni Chapter and National Pan-Hellenic Council Step Show will be held at the Fairfax Campus Center for the Arts at 7:00 p.m. On May 1, the Black Alumni Chapter will sponsor a reception for new graduates in the Johnson Center's Dewberry Hall.

THE SCHOOL OF LAW ALUMNI CHAPTER will sponsor the ninth annual Judicial and Legislative Reception at the Law School on May 24. The reception features music and wine from across the Commonwealth of Virginia and presents a unique opportunity for alumni to gather with attorneys, judges, and legislators from Virginia and the District of Columbia.

LIBRARIES ARE BECOMING COOLER AT MASON! If you see a student Instant Messaging on his laptop in the Johnson Center, or listening to an iPod in the library, there’s a chance he might actually be studying. With the University Libraries pushing to combine new technologies and new ways of communicating with researchers, these devices are quickly making their way into scholarly work.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WEEK once a year, but the university's diverse student body and faculty, combined with its global emphasis in the curriculum, could be celebrated all year. Named the most diverse university in the nation by Princeton Review for the past two years, George Mason has an enrollment that is nearly one-third minority, including more than 1,700 international students.

TWENTY-SIX MASON STUDENTS STUDYING MUSIC recently represented the university’s Department of Music Vocal Studies program at the 2006 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Virginia State Conference and Vocal Competition and came away with a cartload of awards. The students study under music faculty professors Lisa Berger, Patricia Miller and Debby Wenner.

NORMALLY, IF A FIRE BREAKS OUT DURING A FIELD TRIP, it’s a bad sign. Last month, however, graduate students studying wildland fire management found that fire illuminated their research. Traveling to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge, Md., the students were able to witness a prescribed burn of 300 acres of marshland.

BEERS & CUTLER, AN ACCOUNTING AND CONSULTING FIRM focused on the Washington, D.C., region, has established a $250,000 James R. Beers Accounting Scholarship Endowment for Mason accounting students in the School of Management. The gift, given to the university's Campaign for Mason Students, is the largest corporate scholarship gift in Mason's history.

THE BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME AND CHIP HILTON SPORTS HAVE ANNOUNCED that Mason's Coach Jim Larranaga is the 2006 recipient of the Coach Clair Bee Award. The Coach Clair Bee Award honors the Active Division I men's basketball coach who has made the most significant positive contribution to his sport during the preceding year.

THERE ARE INDICATORS FROM ALL OVER THAT THE EXCITEMENT generated by the hugely successful George Mason men's basketball team hasn't died down, and that the aftereffects of the Patriots' remarkable run in the NCAA Tournament continue. The team recorded yet another benchmark on Tuesday, three days after playing its final game of the season: The Patriots achieved the program's highest-ever ranking, finishing eighth in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.

AS THE CULMINATION OF WHAT COACH JIM LARRANAGA called "this awesome magic carpet ride," a parade was held Friday by the City of Fairfax and George Mason to honor the men's basketball team. After the parade, the coaches and team were honored with keys to the city by Mayor Robert Lederer, a proclamation that will go into the Congressional Record, a U.S. postal cancellation, and banners signed by area well-wishers and presented by Visit Fairfax.

Mason's Women's Rowing Team
THE MASON WOMEN'S ROWING TEAM entered four boats into the Bucknell Invitational and had some good results this past Saturday. The varsity 8 had a strong start and a great first 1000 meters and were about even with Bucknell at the half way point, but Bucknell made a move and fell off the pace. The Patriot rowers will compete in the CAA Championship this weekend.

THE PATRIOT CLUB, Mason's athletics booster program, announces two upcoming events. First, Patriot Club will partner with University Police to run the 8th annual Aimee Willard Memorial 5K Run on Thursday, April 27. On Tuesday, May 2, Patriot Club will host the official Final Four Celebration at the Patriot Center, which promises to be a special evening of celebration honoring Mason’s first appearance in the Final Four.
