Alumni Day at the Patriot Center


Mason alumni, their families, and friends are invited to return to Fairfax to cheer on the men's basketball team for what promises to be a spirited game against the JMU Dukes on Saturday, January 13. The Alumni Association will welcome Mason alumni at the west entrance of the Patriot Center. Discounted ticket prices are available for alumni who purchase tickets online.

The History & Art History Alumni Chapter invites all alumni to tour George Washington's historic Mount Vernon on Saturday, January 27. Alumni Association Seeks Nominations for Celebration of Distinction Awards


Every year the Alumni Association recognizes outstanding alumni, students, and faculty at Celebration of Distinction, a dinner and awards ceremony. Top awards include the Alumnus of the Year, the Alumni Service Award, Faculty Member of the Year, and Senior of the Year. These awards are designed to recognize alumni, faculty, and students that are making a difference for Mason. In addition to awards presented, the Alumni Association will present four student scholarships.

Vision Series Lecture - "Air Transportation: A Tale of Prisoners, Sheep and Sociopaths"


George Donohue, professor of systems engineering and operations research and director of Mason's Air Transport Systems Research Center, will explain why current U.S. governmental policies are creating problems and what citizens can do about it in his lecture, "Air Transportation: A Tale of Prisoners, Sheep and Sociopaths," on Monday, January 29 at 8:00 p.m. The event is free but tickets are required.

University Celebrates Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.


Alumni and the university community will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Thursday, February 1 on the Fairfax campus. The day will begin with a read-in discussion of Dr. King’s book, Where Do We Go From Here? in the Robeson Room of the Johnson Center and a symbolic march at 1:00 p.m. from the Mason statue to Dewberry Hall where the main program will begin at 1:30 p.m. This year’s program will feature a panel discussion moderated by Maureen Bunyan, anchor of Washington's ABC News 7.

Board of Visitors Welcomes New Alumni Members and Approves New Degrees and Department


Anne K. Altman, BS '82, managing director, U.S., Federal IBM Corporation, and Glenn C. Lewis, JD '77, chairman and founder of The Lewis Law Firm, were appointed earlier this fall as the two new members of George Mason University’s Board of Visitors. The BOV also approved two new degree programs and established a Department of Administration of Justice in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Aerospace Center Hosts Programs on Space Exploration and Policy


The Center for Aerospace Policy Research in the School of Public Policy is busy conducting workshops, conferences, seminars and short courses. Many of the programs examine data about space exploration, recommend policies to further space research and promote a better understanding of possibilities for the private and public sectors.

George Mason Partners with IntelliDyne to Develop Undergraduate Scholarship


George Mason alumnus Robert Grey (BA '89), president and CEO of IntelliDyne, will donate $60,000 to The Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering to create the IntelliDyne Distinguished Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship will provide the Volgenau School with the means to compete with other universities that are able to provide "full-ride" scholarships to top high school students.

Patriot Club Bus Trips to ODU & JMU Away Games


Alumni are invited to take a Mason road trip with the Patriot Club as the men's basketball team travels to ODU to play the Monarchs on January 6 and to JMU to play the Dukes on January 27. The Patriot Club is offering all-inclusive packages which include a game ticket, round-trip bus service to and from the arenas, snacks and beverages during the bus ride, and an unforgettable atmosphere for Mason madness!

Duke Game Prompts Mason Spirit Near and Far


Local alumni gathered last Saturday to cheer on the men's basketball team as it faced ninth ranked Duke. The spirit was alive through the end of the game, despite the 15-point loss. Outside Fairfax, team support was seen in Chicago, Atlanta, and New York City as alumni hosted watch parties for the nationally televised game. ESPN2 will televise Mason vs. Hofstra on February 10.

Mason Creates Blue Ribbon Panel to Review Updated Mascot Designs


George Mason has created a blue ribbon panel to assess and evaluate proposed designs for the university’s mascot. According to Christine LaPaille, vice president for university relations, the group has been formed as the next step in the process the university set up more than a year ago to determine whether Gunston, Mason’s mascot for the past 10 years, captures the "dynamic spirit of our institution and the patriotic roots of the founding father for whom we are named."

Fabien LewisMen's Soccer Players Earn All-South Atlantic Region Honors


Freshmen Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky.) and senior defender Fabien Lewis (Fyzabad, Trinidad) were both named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Atlantic Region Third Team. Mason closed out the 2006 campaign fourth in the CAA with an overall record of 12-6-3 and a 7-3-1 mark in league play.

Harry ZanderWrestler Zander Finishes Fourth at Las Vegas Invitational


George Mason wrestling concluded the two-day Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational tournament on Saturday, December 2, with 32.5 team points, good for a 26th-place finish. Redshirt junior Harry Zander placed at the prestigious tournament, finishing fourth at 197 pounds. Zander went 8-2 at the tournament, and 3-1 on the second and final day of action.

Pro Swimmer Ziegler Sets American Records


Kate ZieglerMason freshman and pro swimmer Kate Ziegler set an American record with a time of 15:37.17 in the 1650 freestyle on Thursday, December 7, in the Tom Dolan Invitational at Mason. The old record of 15:39.14 was set on March 17, 1990, by Californian Janet Evans, a star in the 1988 Olympic Games. Not to be outdone, Ziegler broke a second American record on Sunday, December 10, with a time of 9:21.57 in the 1,000-yard freestyle on the last day of the Dolan Invitational. That shattered the mark of 9:24.80, which Ziegler established last year at Mason.
