  • THIS YEAR HOMECOMING GROWS to a weekend filled with exciting events. In addition to our traditional Saturday activities - the homecoming block party, Patriot's basketball, and fireworks - Friday night activities are being added to the celebration. All alumni are invited and encouraged to participate in any and all of the events.

  • THE KRASNOW INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY is continuing its Monday Seminar series this spring, where an invited guest speaker gives a presentation on a topic in the cognitive sciences. The free lectures are held at 4 p.m. in Room 229 of the Krasnow Building on the Fairfax Campus. There will be discussion at the end of each seminar.

  • JOHN DRISCOLL, A THEATER MAJOR AT MASON, joined the cast of Guiding Light last year after an exhaustive audition process. If you'd asked him his freshman year when he was jumping in huge snow piles around President's Park, Driscoll would have never suspected any of this could happen. In fact, it is only when he turns on his television and sees himself on one of the most popular daytime soap operas in the United States that he really believes it.

  • DISTANCING HIMSELF FROM COMMENTS made by Eugene Huang, his secretary of technology, last fall, Virginia Gov. Mark Warner told ExecutiveBiz e-magazine recently that George Mason University has the potential to become a major research institution.

  • Daniel Polsby

  • DANIEL POLSBY, Mason Foundation Professor of Law at George Mason since 1999, has been named the university's new dean of the School of Law. Polsby has been serving as the law school's acting dean since 2004. He replaces Mark Grady, who stepped down last year.

  • THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY (SPP) has been selected to develop and host a fellows program for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Chosen over four other area institutions, the winning proposal was submitted by Lee Fritschler, professor, and Catherine Rudder, associate dean of academic affairs.

  • School of Management

  • THE ASSOCIATION TO ADVANCE COLLEGIATE SCHOOLS OF BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL (AACSB), the premier accrediting agency and service organization for business schools, announced that the School of Management achieved reaffirmation of accreditation. Out of more than 2,000 business schools in the nation, less than 15 percent achieve AACSB accreditation, which represents the highest standard of achievement in business education.

  • THE SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (IT&E) and Chantilly Academy in Fairfax have entered into an agreement to assist economically disadvantaged students in getting a start at George Mason. The agreement allows students who take either engineering systems or engineering physics at the academy and who enroll at Mason to receive three college credits in Systems 101 (SYST 101), a course that introduces students to the profession of systems engineering.

  • WHILE OTHER STUDENTS WERE ENJOYING WINTER BREAK in late December and January, George Mason's student-athletes were busy racking up points on the scoreboard and earning team and individual recognition.

  • AFTER SPENDING TWO WEEKS AT NO. 15 in the USA Today/AVCA Top 15 poll, the George Mason men's volleyball team ascended one spot in the rankings, moving up to No. 14 after defeating New York University, 3-1. The Patriots are ranked this year for the first time since 1995, when they finished the season ranked 12th.

  • MASON SENIOR GOALKEEPER SARAH COUGHLIN (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) was recently named to the 2004 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Women's College Scholar All-America Third Team, as voted on by members of the association. Coughlin was presented her award on Jan. 14, as part of the 2004 NSCAA Convention in Baltimore, Md.
