Alumni Invited to Anousheh Ansari Lecture
Anousheh Ansari captured headlines around the world on Sep. 18, 2006, as the first female private space explorer. She also earned a place in history as the fourth private explorer to visit space and the first astronaut of Iranian descent. Ansari will speak at Mason on February 20 at 2:00 p.m.

CVPA Presents "Arts in the Real World"

Black History Celebrated with Music and More at Mason during February
If there is one thing that sets Mason's Black History Month apart from most campus celebrations, it is the music. From Mason's own gospel choir, the Anointed Voices of Unity, and music professor Patricia Miller's stirring tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. to Mason's annual collaboration with the Duke Ellington School and a Center for the Arts performance of the Soweto Gospel Choir, the month of February provides musical celebrations galore.

BOV Approves New Room and Board Rates, Retirement Center Concept
At its late January meeting, the Board of Visitors approved new room and board rates and approved the concept of a university-based retirement center. The BOV adopted the concept of constructing a university-based retirement center on Mason’s Fairfax Campus after receiving a proposal from Sunrise Senior Living Inc.

Upcoming Vision Series Lecture - Childhood Obesity
Lisa Pawloski, associate professor of global and community health will present a lecture titled "Childhood Obesity: Our Newest Global Epidemic?" as a part of the Vision Lecture Series on February 26. Pawloski's talk will highlight her research conducted in Mali, Nicaragua and Thailand and how researchers are now finding childhood obesity rates soaring in nations still plagued with hunger and poverty. Mason Alumni are invited to attend this free lecture.

CEHD Professor Receives Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award
Priscilla Norton, professor of instructional technology in Mason's College of Education and Human Development, received an Outstanding Faculty Award from Gov. Timothy Kaine. Norton was recognized along with 11 other outstanding faculty members from Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration and public service.

Mason Chemist Wins $1 Million Prize
Abul Hussam, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, received the 2007 Grainger Challenge Prize for Sustainability Gold Award of $1 million from the National Academy of Engineering. The award recognized his innovative solution for removing arsenic from drinking water that is poisoning tens of millions of people in developing countries.

CAA Means More Than Sports
On the basketball court and soccer fields, the 12 members of the Colonial Athletic Association can be intense rivals. But thanks to the Colonial Academic Alliance, the students, faculty and staff who attend CAA schools are teammates. The Colonial Academic Alliance is the academic consortium that links 12 colleges and universities in programs that improve the quality of teaching and learning. The alliance was created by CAA presidents in 2002, and is administered by the provosts of the member schools.

CAA Basketball Tournament
Alumni are invited to cheer on the men's basketball team during the CAA Tournament in Richmond from March 2-5! The official headquarters of pre-game and post-game activities will take place at the GMUgear.com Mason Nation Headquarters. Tickets for the men's CAA Tournament can be purchased from the GMU Athletic Ticket Office by completing an online form and faxing it by Feb. 19.

Patriots Snap Losing Streak With Solid Shooting Night At Delaware
The George Mason men's basketball team avoided its first four-game losing streak in a single season in nearly nine years and the Patriots returned to .500 in Colonial Athletic Association action as the Patriots took a 66-46 win over Delaware at Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. on Wednesday night.
