Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration 2008

Please join the Mason community for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration. To celebrate Black History Month and commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Mason will hold a series of events on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Jan. 31. The theme for the commemoration is "Where Do We Go from Here: Making the Dream a Reality" and is intended to reinforce the relevancy of King's ideas as applied to contemporary issues.

Last Call for Alumni Award Nominations

For more than 30 years, the Alumni Association has honored individuals who have enhanced Mason’s reputation through their outstanding achievements. Please nominate someone you know who is worthy of recognition for the Alumnus of the Year Award or the Alumni Service Award. Nominations are also sought for the Faculty Member of the Year Award. The deadline for submissions is February 11, 2008.

Mason Rocks: Homecoming 2008

Homecoming 2008 is almost here. Gather your friends and family and join the fun by celebrating MASON ROCKS on Saturday, February 16. Special Homecoming events for alumni include a Faculty/Staff Alumni Reception, a Beer Tasting, and a Student Leader Alumni Reception. Show your Patriot Pride at the traditional Block Party featuring tailgating, activities for children, College Row, a pre-game Pep Rally and fireworks following the game. The MPA Alumni Chapter and the GVIP Alumni Chapter are co-sponsoring the American Society for Public Administrators series on regional governance issues.  The next series event will be on Transportation and will take place on February 20.  Please join us on the Arlington campus, Room 329 at 6:30 p.m.

First Saturdays Family Event: Basketball Watch Party at Hard Times Cafe

Join us on Saturday, March 1 for a family game watching party at Hard Times Café in Fairfax.  The men’s basketball team will take on Northeastern that day starting at 2:00 p.m.  The event cost $11.50 per adult and $8.00 kid; prices include chili dog buffet and snacks.

Mason Law Graduates Achieve Highest Virginia Bar Pass Rate

Continuing a positive tradition, Mason Law graduates passed the July 2007 Virginia Bar exam by a greater percentage than the state average.  In fact, Mason achieved the highest pass rate of any Virginia law school.

Business Alliance Attracts New Companies to Grubstake Breakfast

Since 1998, the Business Alliance of George Mason University has been raising the level of venture capital investments in the Washington D.C., region.  The nonprofit membership organization that connects the local business community with Mason hosts its signature breakfasts three times per year.

Mason Researchers Apply New Strategies to War on Breast Cancer

Scientists at Mason’s Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM) and clinicians at the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center in Falls Church, Va., will investigate living breast tissue to determine if cancer stem cells — thought to be the driving force behind the development of cancer — are present in the earliest stages of premalignant tumors.

Mason Participates in National Teach-in on Climate Change

To educate America's students and citizens about the far-reaching and irreversible impacts of global warming, Mason will participate in a nationwide teach-in on climate change sponsored by Focus the Nation.   The event will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 29, from noon to 7:15 p.m. in the Johnson Center's Dewberry Hall on the Fairfax Campus. The teach-in is free and open to the public.

Forensics Team Wins National Competition

For the first time, Mason's Forensics Team won the competition on both days of the Hell Froze Over National Invitational Forensics Tournament held at the University of Texas at Austin, Jan. 12-13. More than 1,000 entries competed for top honors. Nine of the top 10 teams in the nation, as well as dozens more, competed for the coveted title.

Dre Smith Sets NCAA Record

Dre Smith set an NCAA record for three-pointers in a game without a miss, and his career-high 34 points pushed the Patriots to a 96-75 win over James Madison in front of 6,659 fans at JMU Convocation Center on Saturday, January 19.

Women’s Basketball coach, Debbie Taneyhill, BA`92 and MEd`98, with Tiffany Reaves and Courtney Exum, Juniors in the Sports Management program, are implementing Womentoring, a mentoring program involving Mason female faculty and staff members and the 13 female athletes on the women’s basketball team.

Mason Hall of Famer Named Head Coach of MLS Chicago Fire

Denis Hamlett, a George Mason graduate and a member of the Patriots' Men's Soccer Hall of Fame, was hired as the head coach of Major League Soccer's (MLS) Chicago Fire, the team announced on Friday evening. After signing a multiple-year contract, Hamlett becomes the fourth head coach in the 10-year history of the club.

Men’s Volleyball Opens Season with a Victory

The thirteenth-ranked George Mason men's volleyball team opened its 2008 campaign with a dominating defensive effort against the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez to down the Tarzanes in three games (30-18, 30-20, 30-25). The Patriots held UPRM to a .034 hitting percentage and registered 20 blocks in the match.
