HOMECOMING 2006 - EVENT HIGHLIGHTS Women’s Basketball Pre-Game Party Friday, Feb. 10 ~ 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Patriot Center East Concourse Hospitality Room The alumni association and women's head coach, alumna Debbie Taneyhill, invite all alumni to a pre-game party before the women's basketball game. Enjoy this homecoming event which will include free food and beverages, a pre-game “chalk talk” from Coach Taneyhill, and plenty of Patriot fun. - Homecoming Block Party including Family-Friendly
KidZone and College Row Saturday, Feb. 11 ~ 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. Patriot Center, Lot L Don't miss the annual homecoming block party, an event where students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests drive in to Lot L, park their cars, get out their grills, and celebrate their pride in Mason. This year's block party will include the 3rd annual College Row, a unique component of Mason’s Homecoming that brings together faculty, staff, alumni, and alumni chapters from each academic unit to get reacquainted, reminisce, and share the latest news from their academic discipline. The block party will also include the 2nd annual Mason family friendly area designed to give young children a place to enjoy Homecoming and participate in activities just for kids.

MASON WILL HONOR THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., on February 2. The theme for this year's event is "Empowering Community: Realizing the Vision," and the keynote speaker is Kevin Powell, journalist, author, educator and activist. Please join your fellow alumni and the university community to celebrate Dr. King's extraordinary life.

JOIN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (CEHD) ALUMNI CHAPTER on Friday, Jan. 27 for a TGIF Happy Hour at Brion’s Grille from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Located at 10624 Braddock Road in the University Mall Shopping Center, the restaurant is right across from the Fairfax campus. This will be a wonderful time for Mason grads and current students from the Graduate School of Education, The School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, and the Division of Undergraduate Studies in Education to meet and network to share information about careers relating to their fields of study.

DANIELE STRUPPA, DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES (CAS), will be leaving the university to take a position as provost of Chapman University in Orange, Calif., as of July 1. Struppa has been with George Mason University since 1989, when he was hired as a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He has been dean of CAS for more than eight years.

WITH THE HELP OF GENEROUS DONORS, THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES have increased efforts to digitize rare or important collections to make them more available to students, faculty, staff and the public. One prominent collection being selectively digitized by graduate history students is the Planned Community Archives (PCA) Collection.

GMU-TV HAS WON SO MANY AWARDS – 57 in the last 10 years – that the elegant gold and silver statuettes and sparkling plaques overflow the unit's display case and are scattered throughout offices and studios in Innovation Hall. In 2005, GMU-TV went platinum, winning the highest level in the national Aurora competition for independent film and video programs and commercials. The best of show award was among the 11 honors GMU-TV earned this year alone. Coincidentally, all GMU-TV staff members have attended Mason!

PRESIDENTS OF SEVERAL KOREAN UNIVERSITIES MET WITH PRESIDENT ALAN MERTEN on the Fairfax Campus last week. Merten visited their country last year. Seated next to Merten is Jin-Woo Lee, president of Keimyung University, Daegu, Korea. George Mason is working to establish some reciprocal relationships with the universities. |

THE YEAR 2006 MARKS THE NCAA CENTENNIAL as well the 25th anniversary of women's championships in the NCAA. George Mason began its athletics tradition with the formation of the men's basketball team during the 1966-67 season. Tennis was the first women's sport at Mason in 1972-73. To celebrate the centennial, Mason's Athletics Department has special events planned, including campus and community events that commemorate 40 years of the student-athlete at George Mason.

THE MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TOOK DOWN THE JMU DUKES on Jan. 14 during the second half with a 12-0 run and the Patriots forced eight James Madison turnovers in the first 10 minutes after intermission allowing Mason to pull away from the Dukes, downing James Madison 65-43 in Harrisonburg, Va. Mason has now won five straight and 11 of 13 since a home loss in late November to Creighton. The Patriots are 12-4 overall, tying their second-best 16-game start.

JUNIOR TOM KOUCHERAVY CAN BE FOUND in the Jan. 9 issue of Sports Illustrated in the "Faces in the Crowd" for his outstanding performance at the Patriot Invitational Nov. 18-20, 2005. Koucheravy won three events during the Invitational that set new school and meet records in each event.

THE 2006 INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD SEASON began for the George Mason men's and women's teams on Saturday, January 7, as the Patriots hosted the Father Diamond Invitational. Four Mason athletes qualified for major late-season meets. The men's and women's indoor track and field team's next competition will be at the Patriot Games at the George Mason Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 28.
