UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY HAS THE HONOR OF BEING NAMED THE LARGEST UNIVERSITY IN VIRGINIA for the second year in a row. With a projected overall student enrollment of 28,750, Mason tops Virginia Tech, which has an enrollment of 27,755, and Virginia Commonwealth University, which has an enrollment of 26,755. The commonwealth's smallest four-year institution is Longwood University, with an enrollment of 4,252.

  • MASON PRESIDENT ALAN G. MERTEN WILL TRAVEL TO CHINA THIS FALL to make connections with alumni and prospective students. He hopes to raise the university's international profile and help strengthen and explore new educational linkages with institutions in China, Korea, and Taiwan. He will be meeting with university representatives, business, government, and community leaders, Mason graduates, and even prospective students.

  • DIVERSITY IS AGAIN MAINTAINED AT MASON AS THE UNIVERSITY HOLDS ITS POSITION AS ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE four-year institutions in the nation. The Office of Institutional Assessment's (OIA) report on a survey of freshmen entering in the fall of 2003 revealed that 18% of last year's freshman class was born outside of the U.S.

  • STUDY ABROAD CONTINUES TO BE A POPULAR OPTION FOR MASON STUDENTS, despite turmoil in some parts of the world. Studying abroad has remained a popular option for students, even after Sept. 11, 2001, the Center for Global Education (CGE) has found. "Right after [the attacks], we experienced a decrease in study abroad students, but that summer we actually had a record-high number of study abroad participants," CGE reports.

  • THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATION (CCE) PROGRAM WILL OFFER A NEW MASTER'S DEGREE in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) this fall, concentrating in higher education administration or student affairs. The degree will prepare students for administrative and leadership positions in colleges and universities, associations, and government agencies whose activities influence higher education.

  • MASON STUDENT ALAN WEBB HAS QUALIFIED FOR THE U.S. OLYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD TEAM. The sports commentators can't stop talking about it - the way Webb pulled away from the pack in the 1500-meter race, finishing in 3:36.13, at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials held earlier this month in Sacramento. The primal scream he let out after crossing the finish line. In fact, they had been speculating for weeks about the Reston native and his chances for ending what they are calling the Olympic "medal drought" in the mile.

  • THE WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAM CAPTURED THE 2004 PRAGUE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP, held in the Czech Republic. George Mason's adventures in Europe ended on a very positive note as the Patriots captured the 2004 Prague Cup championship at the SK Slavia Praha (Sport Club Slovenia Prague) athletic fields in Prague. The tournament, which was held Wednesday through Saturday, July 14-17, featured five teams, and also offered a four-team Prague Cup Teen Tournament.

  • THE JAMICAN OLYMPIC TEAM WILL ALSO CONSIST OF A MASON ALUMNUS AND STUDENT! This summer, Mason student Richard Phillips, who normally represents the Patriots on the track, is going to be on a different stage wearing a different name on his jersey. The rising senior will travel to Athens for the Olympic Games as a member of the Jamaican track and field team.
