    George Mason University License Plate
  • GEORGE MASON'S OFFICIAL VIRGINIA LICENSE PLATE has been redesigned to reflect the university's new visual identity. The plates are available for purchase through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and benefit George Mason. "The new plate will allow alumni and friends of George Mason to show their support and pride of the university," says Alumni Association President Cathy Lemmon, BA Communication '86, MA Professional Writing and Editing '93.

  • THE BLACK ALUMNI CHAPTER WILL HOST ITS ANNUAL BARBECUE on Saturday, September 10 at the Dulles Golf Center and Sports Park (Dugout Pavilion Area) from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Activities will include putt-putt golf, batting cage, basketball, driving range, horseshoes, etc. For more information or to register and purchase tickets, please visit the chapter website.

  • THE ARLINGTON CAMPUS BUILDING THAT HOUSES THE GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW will be named John T. Hazel Jr. Hall, the university's Board of Visitors decided in a unanimous vote. A prominent attorney and real estate developer, Hazel led the effort to help Mason acquire a law school in 1979.

  • D. JEAN WU, M.S. INFORMATION SYSTEMS '87, group vice president of Anteon Corp. and founder of Integrated Management Services Inc., has been appointed to the George Mason University Board of Visitors. Wu currently serves on the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees and the Minority Advisory Board of the university.

  • Randolph H. Lytton Historical Postcards

  • RANDOLPH LYTTON, A PROFESSOR OF HISTORY AT MASON whose specialty is Greek and Roman history, is fascinated with the local history of Northern Virginia and recently donated a portion of his collection to the University Libraries. More than 200 postcards of places in Fairfax during the late 19th and 20th centuries were given to the Libraries' Special Collections and Archives.

  • The new Patriot Center

  • EVERYBODY WINS WITH THE PLANS ON THE DRAWING BOARD for athletic and recreational facilities at George Mason's Fairfax Campus. Student-athletes will get a new venue for volleyball and wrestling; recreational athletes will get expanded fitness areas; and the public will be treated to enhanced spectator facilities. Pictured to the right is the newly designed exterior of the Patriot Center.

  • Kristi Glakas

  • SENIOR KRISTI GLAKAS, A DOUBLE MAJOR IN ENGLISH with a concentration in contemporary world literature and pre-medicine, was crowned Miss Virginia on June 25 in Roanoke, beating out 27 other contestants. Although it was her first time participating in this pageant, Glakas was Miss Virginia Teen USA 1999 and Miss Virginia USA 2004. As part of her prize package for winning her most recent crown, Glakas will receive a $16,000 scholarship and an apartment.

PATRIOT SPORTS

Burke Binning has been named the top women's track and field/cross country assistant coach.
  • BURKE BINNING, FORMER CROSS COUNTRY HEAD COACH and distance assistant coach for the Texas Tech University track and field team, has been named the top women's track and field/cross country assistant coach at George Mason University, head coach Angie Taylor announced Friday. Binning began his duties at George Mason on July 18.

  • SECOND-YEAR HEAD SOCCER COACH DIANE DRAKE announced the addition of Robert E. Liessem, Jr. as an assistant to the women's soccer staff. Liessem enters his third season overall in collegiate coaching and will serve as the Patriots' goalkeeping coach, beginning in 2005. Liessem spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as an assistant and goalkeeping coach at Old Dominion University.

  • Patriot Club

  • THE PATRIOT CLUB, which was founded in 1976, acts as the primary fund-raising body for George Mason's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The club is in the process of expanding its membership base and increasing the amount of money it brings in to fund a number of initiatives. Monies raised by the club are used to fund annual scholarships for student-athletes, maintain existing facilities, and, in the future, construct new facilities.

  • MASON'S MEN'S VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH FRED CHAO will have a busy summer this season, after being named an assistant coach on the 2005 Men's Junior National Team and selected to coach one of three USA Development Camps. In 2001, Chao was awarded the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Coach of the Year.
