From the campus scene...

Residence halls that are part of the Northeast Sector Development Plan are rising quickly behind Fenwick Library on the Fairfax Campus. The first phase is set to open in fall 2007.

FORMER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, JIM LAYCHAK, BS Accounting and Decision Sciences '83, addressed the crowd attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the Pentagon Memorial on June 15. Laychak, who lost his brother David, an Army civilian working at the Pentagon, on 9/11, serves as president and chairman of the board of the Pentagon Memorial Fund. The memorial is expected to be completed in September 2008.

VIRGINIA GOV. TIMOTHY KAINE APPOINTED POET AND MASON ALUMNA Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda to the post of Virginia poet laureate. She holds three degrees from Mason and in 1983, Kreiter-Foronda was awarded the very first doctoral degree given by the university. Virginia's Poet Laureate is an honorary position created to encourage the exchange of arts information and perspectives.

REIGNING MISS VIRGINIA AND MASON SENIOR KRISTI GLAKAS got to hand off her title on June 24 in Roanoke, Va., to a fellow Patriot, Adrianna Sgarlata, an alumna with a bachelor of music degree from 2005 who is currently enrolled in a master of music degree program. An opera singer who has been studying voice for nine years, Sgarlata has won numerous awards while at Mason, including first place in the mid-Atlantic region and twice first place in the state at the annual National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR LAW PROFESSOR WILLIAM LASH III, who died last Friday, will be held in the School of Law atrium on Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. The memorial is open to the entire university community. Lash began teaching at Mason’s School of Law in 1994. He left the university in 2001 to serve as assistant secretary for market access and compliance at the U.S. Department of Commerce until 2005. He returned to Mason in the fall of 2005 to resume teaching duties.

ONCE THE DUST CLEARED AND GOV. TIMOTHY KAINE signed the FY2007-08 budget on June 30, it became clear that the General Assembly had worked to meet many of Mason's outstanding resource needs. While the General Assembly increased support for all schools in the commonwealth, Mason's increase of 19 percent in 2007 and 22 percent in 2008 reflect the university's role as the largest and fastest growing institution in the state.

IN A YEARLONG LECTURE SERIES BEGINNING THIS FALL, eight distinguished Mason faculty members will share their answers to interesting questions gleaned from their research and current work. The brainchild of Provost Peter Stearns, "The Vision Series" will showcase the talents of Mason experts in health, public policy, psychology, neuroscience, systems engineering, computational sciences and theater.

THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA annually recognizes outstanding Virginia writers in the areas of fiction, nonfiction and poetry with its literary awards. This year, three Mason faculty members are nominated for books written in 2005. The awards will be given at the Ninth Annual Library of Virginia Awards Celebration Honoring Virginia Authors and Friends on Saturday, Oct. 21.

AS OF JULY 1, the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Computational Sciences no longer exist. Instead, two new colleges will begin operations: the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (LAHS) and the College of Science (COS). George Mason's Board of Visitors approved the reorganization more than a year ago after lengthy study and consideration by the faculties of the colleges.

GEORGE MASON STANDOUT TONY SKINN has signed a contract to play professional basketball in France this coming fall. The former guard, who helped lead the Patriots to the Final Four, will play for Roanne in France's ProA League. Roanne finished ninth last year in the 18-team league, compiling a 17-17 record.

GEORGE MASON ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TOM O'CONNOR announced that Max Baker has been promoted to Associate Athletic Director/Executive Director of the Patriot Club. Baker fills the vacancy left by James "Buzzy" Correll, who is returning to his alma mater North Carolina State in a similar role. The Patriot Club is George Mason University's booster club for athletics.

GEORGE MASON'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAM WAS HONORED for its hard work in the classroom, earning designation by the IWLCA as a Division I Honor Squad. In addition, three Mason athletes received individual honors, and were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. The Patriots were among 42 Division I teams to receive designation as an Honor Squad due to their high academic standing.

THE GEORGE MASON WOMEN'S ROWING TEAM has added four recruits to its 2006 class as Caitlin Smith, Charlotte Morris, Kristin La Guardia and Holly Clouse have each signed a national letter-of-intent to row for the Patriots beginning with the fall season. "We are very happy with our recruiting class and it's our biggest recruiting class ever," said Head Coach Geoff Dillard.
