- AT ITS FINAL MEETING OF THE FISCAL YEAR, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION recognized various alumni leaders for their service to their respective chapters, to the Board, and to the university. The Board also approved two new alumni chapters for the School of Information Technology & Engineering and the College of Education and Human Development.

- WITH THE DRAMATIC INCREASE IN SPAM E-MAIL, ALUMNA ALICE FARRIS, BS '81, assumed that an e-mail to her from the Office of Alumni Affairs telling her that she was the iPod winner was a hoax! After proper verification, she was announced as the official winner. All alumni were mailed a postcard in May announcing the drawing, which involved signing into the MASONline Alumni Directory, where all alumni can update their contact information. Alice happily reports that her children are quite envious of her new iPod!
- PARAMOUNT'S KINGS DOMINION CONTINUES TO OFFER summer discounts to Mason alumni. Alumni can save $14 and pay only $31.99 for regular admission. This discount is good for any operating day in 2005.

UNIVERSITY NEWS
- GEORGE MASON WAS RECENTLY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP 100 SCHOOLS for Hispanics by the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. Mason was number one in granting doctoral degrees to Hispanics, according to the May 9, 2005, edition. The university granted the most doctoral degrees-44 out of 149, or 30 percent, according to data gathered in 2003-04 by the National Center for Education Statistics.

- UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT ALAN MERTEN TESTIFIED before the House Committee on Government Reform about the university's participation in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) and William D. Ford Federal Director Loan Program (FDLP). House Committee Chairman Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) invited Merten to testify in the oversight hearing examining the management and performance of the federal programs.

- PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR NORMAN MAILER will receive the Fairfax Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Literature at the annual Fall for the Book Festival, this year to be held Sept. 14-21 on the Fairfax Campus. Mailer, the author of The Naked and the Dead, The Executioner's Song, and Armies of the Night, will appear on the last night of the festival.

- IN THE FALL 0F 2003, THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR BIODEFENSE (NCB) AT GEORGE MASON, together with the Department of Molecular and Microbiology, initiated its graduate certificate and master's and doctoral programs, the first university-based academic programs of their kind. NCB offers programs on topics ranging from biodefense issues to specialized core areas such as microbial biodefense and biological threats and defense.

- THE CLASS OF 2009 IS GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH MASON through freshman orientation which began this week. The Office of Orientation and Family Programs and Services will hold a total of five orientation events between June and July and expects 900 total participants, with 450 of those being new freshman. During orientation students are exposed to academics at Mason, are able to register for classes, they learn about the various services on campus and ways to get involved. Orientation is not only for the students but the parents as well. Part of the orientation programming is geared specifically towards parents and helping them acclimate to the Mason community.
- CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION GOES INTO FULL SWING this summer as projects grow on the Arlington and Fairfax campuses. The George Mason University Foundation, Inc. building on Arlington's campus is slated for completion next summer and the research building on the Fairfax campus will open in December.

PATRIOT SPORTS
- SENIOR CHRIS LOOZE HAS MADE HIS SHARE OF HISTORY on the baseball field, but recently the first baseman made Mason academic history when he was named the 2005 Academic All-American of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Looze is just the sixth Mason student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American, just the second to be named to the first team and the only one to be named Player of the Year in his sport. The biology major carried a 3.90 grade-point average into his final semester at Mason.

- GEORGE MASON SENIOR LACROSSE STANDOUT MEG DENTLER, a graphic design major, was named first-team all-State, while junior Michele Brady, math education major, and senior Brandi Evans, a physical education major, garnered second team honors in voting conducted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
