From the Campus Scene


The review panel appointed by Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine to investigate the circumstances surrounding the April 16 incident at Virginia Tech met at Mason on Monday on the Fairfax Campus.


The Outdoor Education and Leadership class launched a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in the Prince William Campus pond last week. The ROV is used to observe plant and animal life in the water during daylight or evening hours.

Alumnus Collaborates with Mason Scientists on Robotic Brain


"The brain is embodied, and the body is embedded in the environment." That, explains alumnus Jeff Krichmar, now a senior fellow in theoretical neurobiology at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, is his research team's catch phrase. In 1997, Krichmar completed his PhD studies in computational sciences and informatics at Mason where he worked closely with Giorgio Ascoli and under the tutelage of Krasnow Institute director James Olds, among others. Now, Olds, Ascoli, and others at the Krasnow Institute are collaborating with Krichmar and his team at the Neurosciences Institute to study brain function by using robotic devices controlled by simulated nervous systems.

June Alumni Events in Chicago, Denver, Hampton Roads, New York City


Between June 20 and June 28, the Alumni Association will be hosting alumni events in metropolitan areas across the U.S. Since Mason's fantastic run to the NCAA Final Four in 2006, alumni clubs have been gathering strength and various clubs in Chicago, Denver, Hampton Roads (Va.), and New York City are inviting area alumni to events.

Alumnus Elected Chairman of Mason Foundation Board


At its annual meeting last Friday, the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees elected Mason alumnus Michael Anzilotti, president of Virginia Bancorp Inc., as its new chairman. Anzilotti, who received his MBA from Mason in 1983 and an honorary degree in 2003, is the second alum to be elected chairman. He was also awarded as the Alumni Association's Alumnus of Year in 2002.

New Degree Combines Science and Computing to Meet Human Needs


Would you like to become the kind of scientist who uses computers to solve real-world problems? If so, take advantage of the College of Science's new degree, the Bachelor of Science in Computational and Data Sciences (CDS). The degree was established to provide students entering the high-tech workforce with advanced knowledge of computational techniques, applied mathematics and discipline-based science. Mason is currently considering students for fall 2007 admission.

Student-Run Public Policy Journal Debuts


In an effort to showcase students' innovative work, the School of Public Policy (SPP) has launched an online student-run journal, New Voices in Public Policy. The publication is a forum for sharing students’ original policy research and analysis with the broader academic and public policy communities. "New Voices in Public Policy is the realization of a vision for sharing the outstanding scholarship of the school’s student body," says SPP Dean Kingsley Haynes.

Child Development Center Announces Grand Opening


Mason's Child Development Center (CDC) will celebrate the opening of its new facility on the Fairfax Campus with a ceremony on Wednesday, June 20, at 3 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the site of the CDC's new location, 4400 Patriot Circle (near Parking Lot F, to the left of the water tower). Since opening in 1992, although open to the public, the CDC has given enrollment priority to the children of Mason faculty, staff and students at the university, on a first-come, first-served basis. The new CDC will have space for 120 children.

Mason, Professor to Receive Awards for Disability Support


The Arc of Northern Virginia, a disability organization that advocates on behalf of Virginians with intellectual, cognitive and related developmental disabilities and their families, presented awards on June 1 to Mason and to Michael Behrmann, director of Mason's Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities. Mason received a special Lifetime Achievement Award for its contribution to people with disabilities through its employment programs, the LIFE (Learning Into Future Environments) Program and other initiatives.

Mason Hosts USA Biology Olympiad


For the sixth year in a row, Mason is hosting the USA Biology Olympiad, a competition in biology for high school students that was launched in 2002 by the Center of Excellence in Education. The mission of the USABO is to encourage young scholars to pursue careers of excellence and leadership in science and technology. The USABO includes four tiers of competition: a nationwide open exam, a more rigorous semifinal exam, the national finals, and the International Biology Olympiad.

Bour, Fournier, Pannell Selected in MLB Draft


A trio of George Mason baseball players were drafted last Friday in the second day of the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft as Chris Fournier, Jason Bour and J.J. Pannell were all selected between the 16th and 38th rounds. The three players will have until Aug. 15 to sign with their respective teams, at which point the club that drafted them loses their rights and they can not sign with a major league team until after next year's draft.

Ahoure Unable to Compete at NCAA Championships


As a result of a leg injury suffered on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last Wednesday, sophomore Murielle Ahoure (Bristow, Va./Hayfield Secondary), the NCAA East Regional Champion in the 100-meter dash, was unable to compete in the 200-meter dash on the second day of the championships at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. On Wednesday, Ahoure ran in the first round of the 100-meter dash, placing third in her heat with a time of 11.34 seconds to automatically qualify for the semifinals of the event.

Six Rowers Earn CRCA National Academic Honors


The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced the scholar athletes for the 2007 season and six Patriots rowers achieved the criteria of excelling in the classroom in addition to on the water. All student-athletes who achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career and rowed for a minimum of 75% of the spring races or racing in a regional conference event were named CRCA National Scholar-Athlete. Mason's women's rowing team had a successful season winning their first-ever CAA Championship and medaling at the Dad Vail Regatta.

Patriots to Face Kansas State in Old Spice Classic


The George Mason men's basketball team will participate in the 2007 Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. and the Patriots found out on Monday who their opening round opponent will be in the eight-team tournament. The Patriots will play Kansas State at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Night in a game televised on ESPN2. Mason will play two more games in the tournament as the Patriots will face either Villanova or Central Florida on the day after Thanksgiving.
