Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and University President Alan Merten greeted graduates before last Saturday's Commencement. Kaine addressed the Class of 2007.


President Alan Merten joined graduating seniors on May 2 for the annual Welcome Brunch, a Grad Week event, hosted by the Alumni Association.

Association Welcomes New Grads with Pins


The Alumni Association greeted graduates at the 40th annual university Commencement last Saturday with a traditional "Mason Alumni" pin. Alumni began this "pinning" tradition last year and mingle with graduates before their procession to the Patriot Center.

Behavioral Interviewing Seminar for Alumni


Ever wonder why companies decide to select one candidate over another during the hiring process? Come hear Ralph Lattanzio, Mason's "Employer in Residence" describe the decision process. The Alumni Association will host this seminar on Thursday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus.

New York City & Hampton Roads Alumni Events


Hampton Roads alumni are invited to a happy hour social on Thursday, June 21 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Blackfinn Restaurant and Saloon in Norfolk. No RSVP required. New York City area alumni are invited to a happy hour social on Wednesday, June 6 at Triple Crown Ale House at 6:30 p.m. and to a bowling outing on Saturday, June 23 at 1:00 p.m. at 300 New York at Chelsea Piers. Cost is $15 per person and advance RSVP is needed.

Career Services Provides Valuable Job Resources


As graduation loomed for Mason students at the tail end of their programs this semester, many of them focused on forging career paths and networking with future employers. The Office of Career Services has resources to help bridge the sometimes daunting gap between recent college graduates and some of the most sought-after jobs in the working world. James Barricelli, coordinator for employee relations, says Mason students have a certain appeal that draws them to many of today's top employers.

Volunteers Aid in Patriot Pack Out Launch


The first annual Patriot Pack Out - a new recycling and community outreach initiative at Mason - successfully concluded last Thursday when thousands of pounds of food, clothing and appliances were donated to local charities. For an entire week, students moving out of the residence halls on Mason's Fairfax Campus had the opportunity to give what they didn’t want to charities.

Board of Visitors Approves Operating Budget, Elects New Rector


At its meeting on May 9, the Board of Visitors (BOV) approved the 2007-08 university operating budget; a proposal for a PhD degree in sociology; a copyright policy for university works; and a tenure clock extension for new parents. The board also elected a new rector for 2007-08. Outgoing Rector Sid Dewberry was also recognized.

Evelyn CohelanNursing Program Founder Evelyn Cohelan Dies


Evelyn Cohelan, professor emerita of nursing and first chair of Mason's Department of Nursing - the nucleus of what is now the School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) - died April 28. She was 90. During her tenure, the BSN and MSN programs were launched in 1974 and 1978, respectively, and enrollment grew from 96 students to 760.

Mason Collaborates with Virginia Tech on April 16 Archive


Virginia Tech's Center for Digital Discourse and Culture announced the launch of the April 16 Archive documenting the tragic murders committed on the Virginia Tech campus that day. The project was developed in cooperation with Mason's Center for History and New Media (CHNM), and uses technologies that CHNM employs in digital archives such as the September 11 Digital Archive and the Hurricane Digital Memory Bank.

Mason Programs Address Nursing Shortage


With 16,000 vacant nursing positions expected in the Northern Virginia area by 2020, Mason is helping to head off this emerging crisis by addressing the preparation of future nurse educators. Specifically, Mason is working to make its existing PhD and master's-level programs more accessible to new nursing graduates.

New Certificate Program to Give Students an International Edge


When it comes to job interviews, the objective is to stand out from the pool of applicants. Mason students looking for that certain "edge" to impress potential employers can now add a "global proficiency" credential to their resume. In the fall, Mason will initiate the Global Proficiency Certificate (GPC) program. Offered through the Office of University Life, the GPC is a program open to all Mason students looking for cultural learning opportunities.

Mason's Program for First-Generation Students Celebrates Milestone


Mason's Early Identification Program celebrated its 20th anniversary last week by welcoming a new batch of students and congratulating those who finished the program this past year. EIP has had an enviable track record, sending 96 percent of its graduates on to college. EIP identifies local seventh-graders who have high potential but are at risk of not attending college without extra support.

20th Annual Patriot Club Alumni-Athlete Golf Outing


The Patriot Club is proud to host the 20th Annual Alumni-Athlete Golf Outing, sponsored by the Anderson Company, held on Monday, June 4 at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Virginia. All are welcome and encouraged to play. All proceeds will benefit the Mason student-athlete scholarship fund with 10% to be used by the athletic team with the most alumni participation for their operating budget next year.

Patriots Suffer First Three-Game Sweep in Regular-Season Finale


The George Mason baseball team suffered its first three-game sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Patriots dropped the series finale to UNC Wilmington at Brooks Field, 15-2. Mason, which had won at least one game in every three-game series this year, will enter next week's CAA Tournament with a four-game losing streak. The Patriots, the fifth seed in the tournament, will likely play Delaware on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Women's Tennis Lands Top Notch Recruits for 2007-08


George Mason University's head women's tennis coach Stephen Curtis has announced his incoming class for the 2007-08 season. In addition to Lindsay Gray, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Patriot tennis team last November, Curtis has added five more student-athletes in what is believed to be the best recruiting class in Mason tennis history.

Ahoure Successfully Defends Sprint Titles at ECAC Champs


Murielle Ahoure, a sophomore from Bristow, Va., successfully defended her titles in both the 100- and 200-meter dash on the final day of the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at William Weaver Track and Field Stadium in Princeton, N.J. She was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the ECAC Championships for her stellar performance at the three-day meet.

Anderson Named to All-CAA First Team, All-Rookie Team


George Mason freshman Becky Anderson earned two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors for her efforts during the 2007 softball campaign as she was named to the All-CAA First Team, as well as the conference all-rookie squad. Anderson, who represented Mason as a utility player on both of these teams, played in 50 games this season and ended the year with a .239 batting average.
