JOIN YOUR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FOR BASKETBALL ACTION on Saturday, December 9 at PJ Skidoo's in Fairfax. Cheer on the Patriots with friends and fellow alumni as Mason takes on the Duke Blue Devils. The game will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN. Skidoo's will feature drink specials beginning at 11:00 a.m. Come early and enjoy PJ Skidoo's Saturday brunch! Tip-off is at noon.

"COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES: THE THIRD PILLAR OF THE EMPIRICAL SCIENCES" will be presented by Rainald Löhner, distinguished professor of fluid dynamics, on Monday, December 4. Carma HintonCARMA HINTON MAKES AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARIES, but her own life story is compelling drama. New to Mason and the Robinson Professors, Hinton says she joined the Mason faculty because she believed the university would offer her "the support and resources to be who I am: a person who is a scholar and an artist and a documentary filmmaker, a person who can straddle these fields and be encouraged to do so." At any other university, Hinton says, "I would have to try to fit into one department."

ON NOVEMBER 8, PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH ANNOUNCED THAT JAMES BUCHANAN, advisory general director of the Center for Study of Public Choice and distinguished professor emeritus at George Mason who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1986, is one of 10 recipients of the National Humanities Medal for 2006. Buchanan was presented with his medal in the Oval Office of the White House last week.

THE VIRGINIA BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS HAS REPORTED that Mason Law alumni who sat for the state bar exam in July 2006 passed the test in record numbers. “We're very encouraged by our students' fine performance on the Virginia Bar Exam, which is one of the toughest in the country,” says Dan Polsby, dean of the Law School.

WITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHING – and along with it concerns about one's waistline – a number of Mason researchers who focus on obesity weighed in on the subject. Ranging from the complex study of protein in cells to the idea that one's environment determines one's weight, their research examines various elements of this life-threatening problem. Their interests and current projects offer insights into an arguable epidemic in America.

ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO TAKE A MASON ROAD TRIP with the Patriot Club as the men's basketball team travels to ODU to play the Monarchs on January 6, 2007 and to JMU to play the Dukes on January 27, 2007. The Patriot Club is offering all-inclusive packages which include a game ticket, round-trip bus service to and from the arenas, snacks and beverages during the bus ride, and an unforgettable atmosphere for Mason madness!

MASON'S MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAMS are both shining this season and alumni now have many more reasons to be proud of their alma mater! The women's squad had a triumphant return to the All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) teams. On the men's side, freshman goalkeeper Sean Kelley earned one of the top conference honors for the year as he was named the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. Finally, the men's team had the honor to host and play in the 2006 NCAA Division I Soccer Championship.

THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS held season openers on the road. The men won at Cleveland State where returning junior forward Will Thomas had a career-high 25 points and five assists along with 10 rebounds. The women were defeated by the 2006 National Champion Maryland Terrapins, who returned all five starters from last season's squad. Although the Terrapins were pressed on the road in the opener, their talent and depth were evident against the Patriots..

Charles Millioen was the top finisher for the Patriots at the Southeast Regional Championships.THE GEORGE MASON MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD posted a 15th place finish in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship on November 11 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Senior Charles Millioen was the top finisher for the Patriots, placing 44th with a time of 32:07.80 on the 10,000-kilometer course.
