UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • WITH THE START OF CONSTRUCTION ON RESEARCH BUILDING I on the Fairfax Campus this past August, George Mason astronomy students moved one step closer to the heavens. The plans for the new building include a long-wished-for observatory to house a new high-powered telescope that will increase the number of stars students might observe by two billion, a 2,000 percent increase compared to what can be seen with the telescope currently used during weekly observing sessions.

  • THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES UNVEILED ITS EXHIBIT OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAIRFAX CAMPUS on September 30. The earliest known films of the original George Mason campus are among the artifacts featured in an exhibit to commemorate the Fairfax campus's 40th anniversary. "Simplicity, Permanence, and Economy: The Origins of George Mason University's Fairfax Campus" opened on September 27 in the Johnson Center Gallery and runs through October 16.

  • Frank Sesno

  • THE FOURTH INSTALLATION OF "SESNO REPORTS: THE COST OF WAR," will air October 28 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV-26. The program, moderated by Frank Sesno, professor of public policy and communication, veteran journalist, and former CNN Washington bureau chief, was co-produced by WETA, George Mason's School of Public Policy, and the College of Arts and Sciences. It is the first of three programs in the six-program series that will air nationally.

  • CHRISTOPHER AUER WANTED TO MAKE THE DREAM OF OWNING HIS OWN BUSINESS A REALITY, but was unsure exactly where to start. Auer could envision his goal, but needed help taking the first steps, as well as encouragement to keep going. Information was scarce. "Being true believers in the philosophy that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it, my fiancée, Laura Carpenter, and I began to develop a plan to hold a conference geared directly toward the issues that face a young entrepreneur," he says.

  • ALL MASON ALUMNI ARE ENCOURAGED TO GATHER AT BRION'S GRILLE on Friday, October 15, starting at 8 p.m., to kick off the Midnight Madness event. Brion's Grille will graciously offer food and drink specials. A large crowd is expected so come out early and show your Mason pride for the 2004-05 basketball season!
  • JOIN THE DC METRO CHAPTER ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT THE DC CHILI COOK-OFF! The Chapter will host a booth at the annual chili cook-off, which is coordinated by Washington, D.C. radio station, DC 101. The event, which kicks off at 11:00 a.m., will be located on Independence Avenue and 12th Street in the District. If you would like more information about this event or would like to become more involved in the D.C. Metro Chapter, contact chapter president Eric Fadden at eric_fadden@yahoo.com.
  • THE GUIDED HORSEBACK TRAIL RIDE EVENT AT MARRIOTT RANCH still has a few remaining spots for the ride, which begins at noon, in Hume, VA, on Sunday, October 17. The ride costs $35 and is designed for novice horse riders. Contact Darren Silvis (dsilvis@gmu.edu) in the Office of Alumni Affairs.
  • ALL BALTIMORE AREA ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO GATHER FOR AN EVENING RECEPTION at Copra Restaurant on Thursday, October 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Connect with other area alumni and learn about exciting developments at Mason. Free appetizers and drink specials will be available. Copra Restaurant is located at 313 North Charles Street in downtown Baltimore.   • THE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT ALUMNI CHAPTER continues to bring the Alumni Association to you as they visit employment centers throughout the Washington Metro Area. October's event will be held in Alexandria, Virginia at Joe Theismann's Restaurant, which is located directly across from the King Street Metro station.   • THE GMU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL CELEBRATE OUR NAMESAKE'S 279TH BIRTHDAY ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, at his historic home, Gunston Hall Plantation. The event will start at noon with a house tour and/or time to explore the treasures of the Visitor Center library. A delicious lunch of Brunswick stew, salad, bread/rolls, and birthday cake will then be served in the Ann Mason Room. After lunch, we will hear from Mason alumna, Susan Hardenburgh, BA History '04, about her work with the Gunston Hall Archaeology Department and their dig in the formal garden area of the plantation. Afterwards, Susan has agreed to give us all a tour of the site. Cost is $20 per person and tickets are limited, so please reserve now by contacting Andy Ackley (aackley@gmu.edu or 703-993-8739).

PATRIOT SPORTS

  • JUNIOR ANDREA FUSEA WON THE TROPHY FOR THE TOP WOMEN'S SINGLES PLAYER at the 2004 D.C. Metropolitan Championships held last week at Georgetown University. Fusea won the Flight A title, defeating Georgetown's Liz Winokur, 6-1, 6-3. Fusea, a transfer from University of Maryland, did not lose a set in the tournament.

  • GAMES, FUN, AND THE BEGINNING OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON will be featured the night of October 15, as George Mason University's Intercollegiate Athletics Department offers US Army Presents Mason Midnight Madness. Doors open at 10:30 pm, with the start of the festivities at 11:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Men's soccer player Teba McKnight, a junior business major, was named Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season, while freshman women's volleyball player Jaqueline Kohler earned a Rookie of the Week Award after leading the Patriots to a pair of wins.
