JOIN IN THE CELEBRATION OF GEORGE MASON'S 280TH BIRTHDAY on Saturday, December 3. The Alumni Association sponsors an annual event to honor the December 11, 1725 birth of George Mason, our university’s namesake. This year, we will visit Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, one of Mr. Mason’s contemporaries in Virginia public life. Space is limited. Prices are $28 per adult, $23 per child (7th-10th grade), and $15 per child (6th grade and younger) and include bus transportation, lunch, and admission to Monticello.

ALUMNI ARE INVITED TO ATTEND A PRE-GAME TAILGATE PARTY on Friday, October 28th at 4:00 p.m. prior to the men's soccer taking on the Old Dominion Monarchs! A live DJ, free food, and Mason spirit will enliven the crowd before the Patriots battle the ODU team, which is ranked third nationally! Take a FREE practice GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, or PCAT under test-like conditions and receive an analysis of your performance. Gerontology and international health will be among the primary areas of focus for George Mason’s newly named COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (CHHS), approved on Oct. 5 by the university’s Board of Visitors. Formerly known as the College of Nursing and Health Science, the reorganized college will focus on an expanded multidisciplinary approach to meeting the health and human services needs of the Northern Virginia community. The reorganization will occur in phases, beginning in fall 2006 and continuing through 2011.

SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY PROFESSORS A. Lee Fritschler, Catherine Rudder and Jeremy Mayer, along with Fritschler’s former colleague from the Brookings Institute, Bruce L.R. Smith, have been awarded a $100,000 grant to examine the role that political and religious ideology plays on university campuses.

GEORGE MASON PRESIDENT ALAN MERTEN and Vice President of the Arlington Campus, Stanley Taylor, were presented the final $1 million dollar payment by Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette at the county offices earlier this month. The payment finalizes a $5 million grant that county voters approved in 2000 to help the university continue development of the campus.

VIRGINIA GOV. MARK WARNER HAS REQUESTED GEORGE MASON'S ASSISTANCE in developing the first-ever Virginia Plan for Evacuation Event Response. The plan is expected to be completed later this fall, allowing the Commonwealth of Virginia to be the first state in the nation to develop a written plan documenting lessons learned about state-level emergency sheltering response activities necessitated by recent natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

GEORGE MASON'S CENTER FOR EARTH OBSERVING AND SPACE RESEARCH (CEOSR) team has just detected atmospheric anomalies that appeared on previous data for Oct. 1, 2005, one week prior to the 7.6 Pakistan earthquake of Oct. 8. This finding represents a significant step in moving from a retrospective analysis to a predictive capability, with the hope of one day allowing the team to actually predict earthquakes and save countless lives.

THE 2004-05 GEORGE MASON BASKETBALL TEAM experienced a lot of growing pains. With no seniors and four freshmen playing valuable minutes, a 16-13 record seems less like a struggle and more like an adventure. Now, with the 2005-06 season about to get underway, those lessons learned will be put to use. Those losses suffered in close ball games will turn into experience down the stretch.

GEORGE MASON SENIOR MIKE KIRBY SHOT A COURSE-RECORD 61 at last week's James Madison University (JMU) Men's Golf Invitational to lead his team to the championship. This is the second tournament the Patriots golfers have won this season, after winning the opening tournament at Navy on Sept. 10-11. The Patriots finished with one of the best fall seasons in school history with two tournament wins and two second place finishes.

MEN'S SOCCER FRESHMAN GOALKEEPER ERIC BARNES was tabbed Brine Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on September 26. The South Carolina native recorded his first career shutout against Penn State. This is the first conference rookie of the week for Mason in men's soccer since the 2002 season.

THE MASON SWIM TEAMS opened up their seasons at the Potomac Relays on Oct. 14 at Georgetown University. Seven teams competed on each side and Mason's men's team placed second with a score of 81, while the women finished in third (61 points). Both teams open up their Colonial Athletic Association schedule as Mason hosts Delaware on Oct. 22.
