George Mason University Is Known For Its "Firsts"

George Mason University is known for its firsts in many areas, priding itself on its entrepreneurial ventures and innovations.
In an age that demands originality and imagination, Mason is among the nation's most innovative universities. George Mason University responds to the call for excellence in interdisciplinary research and teaching, not simply by adding programs, but by rethinking the traditional structure of the academy.
Many did not known that Mason is:
- First university to offer a graduate degree in biodefense
- First engineering school based on computer-related programs
- First school focused on computational sciences
- First PhD's in conflict resolution, information technology and bioinformatics
- First in Virginia to offer an Information Technology minor to non-engineering students
- First university to outsource on-campus housing management
- First university to outsource events management
- First university to outsource on-campus arena management (Patriot Center)
