Faculty members come and go, administrators come and go, even students come and go, but alumni are Patriots forever. So what do we do with our special permanent status as the only permanent citizens of the Mason Nation?
We become a critical voice at the university. We have three alumni sitting on the Board of Visitors, the university’s governing body, as well as eight alumni on the George Mason University Foundation’s Board of Trustees, including its chair and president. We have 15 chapter presidents intimately involved in their respective departments or schools. We have an active Legislative Advocacy Committee with contacts in Northern Virginia and Richmond. We have a regional alumni outreach program that sponsors events in Tampa, Denver, Chicago, and New York City. We reach out to 24,000 Patriots each month via the MasonWire.
But what else can we do for the Mason Nation? We can reach out to our future citizens, our students; advocate for our alma mater in our communities; volunteer through Career Connection; attend an event; or demonstrate our pride through support for the department or discipline with which we identify most. I urge you to go to the alumni web site (www.gmu.edu/alumni) to add your e-mail address, reconnect with your friends, and update your information in the alumni directory.
Only you and I can pass on the honor of being a citizen of the Mason Nation, so please let your voice be heard.
Once a Patriot, always a Patriot.
