ARL II Construction Update – July 2, 2008:
- Vibrations associated with caisson installation will continue. The vibration impact will be particularly STRONG for occupants of the Original Building – but is not cause for alarm.
- No major disruptive noise issues anticipated within the next two weeks.
- Mass excavations are completed. The majority of the site is at grade.
- Foundation for the tower crane has been poured. Crane to follow once temporary power is established and permits secured.
- Excavating and installing gear for temporary electrical service.
- Back filling of lagging at the western (Original Bldg) edge of the construction site.
- Construction access via the entrance off Kirkwood Road continues to be blocked due to on-going work associated with utility installations. Limited site access will continue to be provided via the alley that runs between the Foundation and Truland Buildings.
- Culvert pieces still being installed along Original Building. Once fully in place and connected to the culvert sections installed along Foundation/Truland buildings, the new storm sewer by-pass will be established and demolition and digging out of the existing storm sewer structure can begin.
- Awaiting approval of proposed Fairfax Drive lane closing in anticipation of crane (month of July) and the creation of a delivery lane for arrival of building materials.
- Two drill rigs are on site and caisson (a watertight chamber used in construction work as a foundation) work has begun. Contractor anticipates work rate to be at the level of 1-2 caissons p/day. To date, 58 caissons have been installed - with approximately 180 caissons needed for the entire project.
- Due to the construction, the two Hazel Hall passenger elevators have been turned off to the B-2 level.
(NOTE: Facilities is still able to key the freight elevator to the B-2 level if necessary. Both Facilities and the SoL library have this key. Please call 703-338-9049 if you need access.)
LOOKING AHEAD:
Major activities anticipated to begin within the next two months:
- Closing of the Pedestrian sidewalk along Fairfax Drive (north side) - for off loading of construction materials.
- Upsizing of transformer – will require scheduled campus power outage (outage being coordinated with all key units – outage currently anticipated to occur sometime spring 2009)
