Making Good on ACOs’ Promise — The Final Rule for the Medicare Shared Savings Program

Dr. Donald Berwick, the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, recently wrote an article in The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Berwick provides his perspective on managing care by working in a team and ultimately improving the quality of care by setting up an accountable care organization (ACO). He highlights how the ACO rules have changed since they were released back in March after receiving about 1,200 comments on the rules from providers, organizations and other health care stakeholders. The comments focused on reducing the barriers to participate in an ACO (criteria and regulations to qualify and participate), reducing the financial barriers in setting up an ACO and lastly, maintaining patient choice. What Should You be Reading About in Health Policy?

To help stay current with health policy news around the nation, we have links for future reference. Healthcare.gov is a great resource not only to look at insurance options and learn about the health care law, but to also learn about individual states, and how much each state spends on treating chronic disease, and how much money can be saved with prevention initiatives. Additionally, the repeal of the health care law continues to move forward with the 11th circuit court concluding that the individual mandate is unconstitutional. To read more details on the decision, Kaiser provides a summary and links to the entire decision, The Health Care blog also has a good piece on the effects of the law if the individual mandate is not intact. Ethics Forum on “Ethical Obesity Policy”, Thursday, November 3

The Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics is hosting the Ethics Forum organized by Dr. Lisa Eckenwiler, Director of Health Care Ethics.
