About the Institute
Institute Format
The four and one-half day program permits professionals interested in local, state and national-level policy to explore all facets of the policymaking process. The Institute uses an interactive format with lectures, case studies and travel to Capitol Hill to attend various congressional meetings and functions. At the Capitol, participants are also expected to meet with their home state congressional delegations. Participants receive a comprehensive syllabus, readings and a directory of Members of Congress and congressional committees.
Hours for the Institute:
- Monday: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
- Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
- Friday: 9:00 am to noon

- How problems drive action
- The role of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches in health policymaking
- The Federal budget
- Influences on the policy process: interest groups, Federal and state agencies, influential leaders, associations, coalitions, and the media

- U.S. health infrastructure - is it up to the challenges of rising costs, growing demands and workforce shortages?
- How to conduct an effective meeting with a Congressional staff member
- Communication skills for political success
- Tracking legislative information on the Internet
