Purpose
The Policy Research Mentorship Program of the Washington Health Policy Institute (WHPI) and the Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics (CHPRE) is designed to develop interest and expertise in health policy analysis among selected WHPI participants. The goals of Policy Research Mentorship Program are to stimulate the conduct and dissemination of research and evaluations that:
- Apply knowledge gained and lessons learned from WHPI;
- Analyze a selected emerging or extant health policy issue of significance to the applicant’s profession and academic or service institution, as well as to CHPRE;
- Produce expert policy analyses targeted at public policymakers; and
- Further interest in and participation at future Washington Health Policy Institutes.
Proposal for Applicant Submissions
CHPRE welcomes applications to the Policy Research Mentorship Program from WHPI participants that advance knowledge and policy development on one of the following topics:
- Health care quality oversight and regulation (acute care or public health).
- Community and public health program effectiveness.
- Financing/access to health services.
- Nursing education systems capacity and efficiency (publicly financed nursing programs).
- Development of integrated care systems for geriatric populations.
- Advanced nurse practice (regulation and third party payment).
- Disaster/emergency preparedness.
PRMP applicants will submit proposals that describe the individual’s interests and goals by way of a prospective policy analysis that:
- Identifies a health policy issue/interest, the need for analysis or study, and its importance to the applicant.
- Outlines the applicant’s idea of a design for a policy analysis of the issue.
- Specifies a timeline and other requirements for completing the project.
- Provides the applicant’s expertise/qualifications/learning objectives for participation in the Policy Research Mentorship Program and analysis of the proposed issue.
Projects must be feasible in the time allowed and resources available. Each selected PRMP fellow will be assigned a CHPRE faculty member who will supervise the policy analysis project as well as advise and mentor the fellow. Each PRMP fellow will receive $2,500 from CHPRE (and up to the same amount from their academic or service institution if they choose to provide matching funds) to support completion, reporting and presentation of the proposed policy analysis project at the next year’s WHPI. In addition, each grantee’s academic or service institution will be provided one (1) tuition scholarship for an additional person to attend the next year’s Institute.
For WHPI participants enrolled in HAP 542 or 546/746:
PRMP proposals submitted and accepted under this solicitation will substitute
for completion of the:
- Testimony assignment for HAP 542;
- Testimony/policy brief assignment for 546/746
