Research and Publications
The Center's international reputation for scholarship derives from the prolific publication record of its research associates. Deeply imbedded in the Center's culture is a "seat-to-the-chair” philosophy—to paraphrase Professor James M. Buchanan—that places primary emphasis on writing books for major academic presses and articles for leading professional journals. This philosophy has borne considerable fruit over the past two decades at George Mason. More than 150 books (view a complete listing) have been published by Center faculty. In addition, Center-affiliated faculty have published thousands of articles in academic journals. The influence of these books and articles in the marketplace of ideas is reflected at least in part by the number of citations they have received in literature—that is, references to Center faculty publications in works published by other scholars. The tracking data that is available from the Social Science Citation Index indicates that material published by Center research associates and Center adjunct faculty accounted for more than 3,000 citations through 2004.
