This season American audiences will witness this renowned Norwegian orchestra as it makes its first U.S. tour. One of the world’s oldest orchestral ensembles, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra’s long and illustrious history includes associations with some of history’s finest maestros, most notably Edvard Grieg. It is now under the direction of the renowned American conductor Andrew Litton, described as “very inspiring and deeply musical” (Bergens Tiedende). One of the music world’s most celebrated piano superstars, Andre Watts joins the orchestra for Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor. Also included on the program is Knut Vaage Chatter and Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 5 and Festive Overture, Op. 96.

Using Stan Kenton’s Merry Christmas (1961) for inspiration, two of the area’s major jazz powerhouses, the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra and the Capitol Bones Big Band, join forces in an evening of swingin’ holiday music. Enjoy the original charts of Ralph Carmichael and Stan Kenton for an innovative version of Adeste Fideles, as well as myriad arrangements of holiday favorites. In 1946, one of Britain’s greatest conductors, Sir Thomas Beecham, founded the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to bring the world’s greatest music to the people of his country. His legacy continues as the Orchestra offers audiences the highest possible standards of music making with a style that has been called, “incisive, insightful, and extremely beautiful.” (The Guardian) Renowned conductor and violinist Pinchas Zukerman, whose genius and prodigious technique have long been a marvel to critics and audiences, will join the RPO for this performance. The tank crew members of The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards gained international renown for their chart-topping “Amazing Grace” recording in the 70s. The trademark of this dynamic group of outstanding musicians, pulled from the ranks of the metro area’s finest jazz players by artistic director Jim Carroll, has always been the insightful interpretation of revered jazz classics. For this performance, the orchestra welcomes trumpeter/actor/singer Byron Stripling in what promises to be a very special night of music. Stripling, artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, earned his stripes as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra and has also played and recorded extensively with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. The Los Angeles Times called him “a towering and powerful trumpet player.”

For over 30 years the State Symphony of Mexico has created numerous recordings that cover a broad range of musical literature, including the works of Verdi and Rossini, Mexican and Spanish music, and the symphonies of Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Program includes Buxtehude’s Chacona in E-minor, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D-Major (“Reformation”), and Rachmaninoff’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 3 in D-minor, Op. 30.

Doc Watson is the recipient of six GRAMMY Awards, a National Medal of the Arts, a National Heritage Fellowship, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award. For this performance, Watson is joined by his grandson Richard, and longtime collaborator and GRAMMY-winning banjoist David Holt, making his Center for the Arts debut, showcasing his universally acknowledged genius and mastery of the flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar. Declared a “national treasure” by President Jimmy Carter, his genius includes an assortment of musical genres, including traditional ballads, fiddle tunes, blues, gospel, country, and contemporary music. This is a groundbreaking performance spanning generations and musical traditions.

For lovers of great jazz, the Monterey Jazz Festival (MJF) has always been the ultimate jazz festival. This season marks its 50th anniversary, and to commemorate this milestone, the festival has organized a national tour. True to its tradition, it brings together old favorites and new talents, each of whom have strong connections to the festival. Terence Blanchard (trumpet) is a 2007 Artist in Residence at Monterey, James Moody (saxophone) has been performing at Monterey since 1963, Benny Green (piano) was part of the MJF High School All-Star Big Band, Nnenna Freelon (guest vocalist) has regularly performed at the MJF and the Next Generation Festival, and Kendrick Scott (drums) performed with the Berklee/Monterey Quartet. “There are many ways to look at a masterpiece such as Beethoven’s ‘Eroica,’” explains Andrew Manze, one of today’s leading musicians and musical preservationists. Manze, with the Helsingborg Symphony, elucidates an iconic pillar of the symphonic repertory – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major, to answer some of the questions which the symphony has inspired. The program opens with Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, moves to Manze sharing a brief history of the symphony, and finishes with this renowned orchestra performing Beethoven’s monumental composition; allowing audiences to experience the “Eroica” with a new appreciation and a genuine sense of discovery.
