Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann is an ambitious work about the forces of mysticism versus enlightenment. Based on the writings of the Romantic author E.T.A. Hoffmann, it tells the story of a young poet in a tavern with friends recounting stories of his three great loves – Olympia, Antonia, and Giuletta – and the evil geniuses who thwart his amorous intentions. Later, drunk and despairing, Hoffmann is rescued by The Muse of Poetry, who nurtures and revives his romantic soul. A Virginia Opera premiere. Sung in French with English supertitles.

This beloved operetta of Gilbert and Sullivan has been delighting audiences with its memorable melodies and tongue-twisting lyrics since its New York premiere in 1879. Virginia Opera presents a traditional Gilbert and Sullivan production of this clever comedy about the honorable Frederic, an orphan, whose hard-of-hearing nursemaid mistakenly apprentices him to a band of softhearted pirates instead of the intended group of pilots. His indenture fulfilled, Frederic goes ashore, stumbles upon the beautiful daughters of Major-General Stanley, and instantly falls in love with the beautiful Mabel. But the pirates arrive and take the lovely young women captive; the Major-General arrives in the nick of time to save them; and complications and hilarity, ensue. Sung in English with supertitles.

Eugene Onegin Fri., Feb. 22 at 8 pm
Sun., Feb. 24 at 2 pm PURCHASE SINGLE TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT - SEPT. 1, 2007
Tchaikovsky’s most popular opera, the brilliant Eugene Onegin, is brought to stage in this Virginia Opera premiere. Onegin is a jaded young aristocrat who carelessly rejects Tatyana after receiving a love letter in which she pours out her heart. Years later, he realizes his love for her, but it is too late. The libretto is based on the epic poem by Pushkin, and much of the poetry has been retained. It is accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s achingly beautiful, emotionally-charged score. This is Virginia Opera’s first presentation of a Russian opera, and it features the debut of a stunning Russian-born soprano, Veronica Mitina as Tatyana. Sung in Russian with English supertitles.

Lucia di Lammermoor Fri., April 18 at 8 pm
Sun., April 20 at 2 pm PURCHASE SINGLE TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT - SEPT. 1, 2007
Donizetti fashioned one of his most passionate operas and mesmerizing heroines after Sir Walter Scott’s classic novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The noble Scots families of Lammermoor and Ravenswood have been feuding for many years, and have sworn to exterminate each other. Lucia’s love for Edgardo, a member of her family’s sworn enemy, ultimately drives her to madness. To Italian audiences of the 1800s, the lonely cliffs of the Scottish highlands seemed a remote and exotic setting – the perfect backdrop for an opera of tempestuous love and family honor. Long a favorite role of some of the world’s most famous sopranos, this bel canto masterpiece is a star vehicle for a singer of vocal suppleness and dramatic intensity.
