Citizenship 2000 is George Mason Universitys program on the role of the
university in fostering citizenship and civic engagement. It is part of
the universitys committment to be a learning centered institution that
provides students and the region basic values of learning, community and
citizenship. The program is being conducted during the Spring 2000
semester and features speakers, panel discussions, demonstrations,
networking events and fine and performing arts activities that
investigate the role of higher education in fostering three key elements
of citizenship: involvement in the political process, engagement on
public policy issues, and working as a member of a community.
Through this site, you can explore the activities in the Citizenship
2000 program, find out about what George Masons students, faculty and
staff are doing about civic involvement, and connect to other programs
and institutions that promote civic education.
Citizenship 2000 has been made possible through the generous support of
George Masons Office of University Life and
The Virginia Foundation for
the Humanities, and through collaboration of the
Virginia Citizenship
Institute. Citizenship 2000 is affiliated with
Fairfax 2000, Fairfax
Countys Millennium Celebration.
