M.S. and Ph.D. Admissions Information

Admission Requirements and Information

For degree status, the general university graduate admissions requirements are as follows:

  • An earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or international equivalent must be verified from official transcripts.
  • A 3.00 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) or better in baccalaureate study.  If a student does not meet this requirement they may be accepted provisionally.

For full consideration for graduate admission, applicants must submit the following:

  • The non refundable $60 application fee if applying online; $75 application fee if submitting a paper application.
  • Two official copies of transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended (Transcript Request Form)
  • A 750 - 1000 word expanded goals statement (the essay can be submitted as part of the on-line application)
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a faculty member in the applicant's undergraduate or graduate major field (Recomendation Form)
  • The Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates, if claiming entitlement to Virginia in-state tuition rates
  • In addition to the requirements above, Ph.D. program applicants must include a written sample of work that shows the applicant's potential for completing dissertation research in a doctoral program (the writing sample may be included as part of the on-line application or sent in hard copy).

  • Background courses in the social sciences, as well as prior work experience, are desirable. Prior graduate academic work is evaluated on an individual basis for possible transfer credit and fulfillment of program requirements; normally, the university does not permit any reduction in the total credits required for the degree. Although students may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis, entry into the program is in the fall semester only.

The GRE is not required, but may be submitted.

An English Proficency Exam is required for all nonnative English speakers regardless of current residence. Proficiency in English is demonstrated through taking either the IELTS - Academic Exam (International English Language Testing System) or the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

An applicant may request an exemption from the English proficiency exam who has completed a bachelor’s degree or higher from a college or university in a native English-speaking country, e.g.: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Required English Proficiency Exam Scores IELTS – Mason requires score of 6.5 or above. TOEFL – Applicants must achieve a 575 on the paper-based exam; a 230 on the computer-based exam; or an 88 on the Internet-based exam, with a minimum score of 20 in each sub-section.

Self-Managed Application Process

Applications can be submitted using the paper application, or you may apply online for a graduate program. The online application requires the application fee to be paid by credit card. Please use the self-managed application process to send all your application support materials to the appropriate graduate admissions office.

The self managed application process requires applicants to submit supporting documents (e.g. transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, writing samples, etc.) in one package mailed to Mason. These documents will then be matched with your online application. Please include your full name, web application login id, date of birth, and Mason G# (If you are currently not a Mason student, you received an email, a few days after you submitted your completed online application, which contained your Mason G#.).

Since graduate admission applications are handled within the individual colleges of Mason, it is critical that you send all of your supporting documentation to the correct admission address.
