Action Learning Project 2000:
North Ireland Summer Initiatives
-
Alternative Tour and Study Trip:
-
This trip is designed explicitly to challenge the tendency of many, especially
in the US, to view people in a conflict region as "others," as people who
are essentially different, not like "us." You will experience the conflict
over North Ireland through encounters not only with academics and politicians
but with ordinary people as well. A particular emphasis is placed on trying
to understand how the conflict has shaped the identities and struggles
of particular individuals and groups and what roles have these individuals
and groups played to shape the course of the conflict and the prospects
for its resolution.
-
June 20-June 30
-
($750: includes program coordination, speakers, and transportation.
People are responsible for their own airfare, food, and we are trying to
secure cheap accommodations. Please arrive in Belfast by June 19th
to be prepared for Orientation June 20th.)
-
International Observers:
-
Join the Irish Parades Emergency Committee (IPEC) and other human rights
groups in responding to the call of residents in the North. Stay
with residents on the Garvaghy Road and the Lower Ormeau road, volunteering
to help monitor the contentious marching season as an independent observer.
-
July 1-July 15 or longer.
-
(Observers are responsible for their own airfare and must be in Belfast
for Orientation on July 1. Those who participate in the study trip
will be dropped in Belfast by July 1).
-
Internship:
-
Live in the North of Ireland and do an unpaid internship with a grassroots
political organization--working with ex-prisoners, women, community building,
education, etc.
-
(Flexible dates. We are working on organizing family stays).
Those interested may apply to participate in one, two, or all three
components. Please email Matt Bowles at Tbowles106@aol.com
to request applications, or to ask questions.
