Alan J. DeYoung, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation at the University of Kentucky. He has spent several years in the republics of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, twice as Fulbright Scholar in the national pedagogical universities of each nation. His area of interest is in educational reform at the secondary school level. In 2004, he and Steve Heyneman published an edited book entitled "Challenges of Education in Central Asia," in which Dr. DeYoung has three chapters on particular issues in educational change in Kyrgyzstan. He is also the primary administrator of a current Freedom Support Act partnership between the Kyrgyz National University and the University of Kentucky, and recently won the John J. and Nancy Lee Roberts Fellowship Award for Research in the former USSR, administered by IREX. This award is facilitating his current study of four rural Kyrgyz secondary schools and their strategies to survive "the transition."
