Advising
Policy at George Mason University
All new students must receive academic advising upon
admission to George Mason University. During or before orientation,
new students should meet with advisors to learn about university
and departmental requirements, discuss their educational plans,
and select courses.
Students who are Undeclared - no preference or are considering changing majors are
advised by professional advisors in Academic Advising Center (AAC). Students
interested in pursuing careers in medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, or veterinary
may receive pre-professional advising in AAC as well. Students may also enter the
university as undeclared within a school or college, and provisions for advising are
made by that school or college. Students with declared majors are advised in their
academic departments.
Upon earning
60 credits, every student is strongly encouraged to meet with an
advisor to adopt a program of study. During this session, advisors
and students should
- evaluate
the student's suitability to major in the chosen discipline;
- review the
requirements for the degree, any special options, and possible
electives;
- identify
any deficiencies in the student's record and ways to correct them;
and
- discuss
career and graduate school option
