STAT 344 Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists I

Prerequisite: MATH 213 (3 semesters of calculus).

Course Description:This course is a calculus based introduction to probability and statistics. The emphasis will be on developing probability and statistical problem solving skills. Roughly two thirds of the course will be spent studying the basic concepts of probability such as: random variables and expectation, bivariate distributions, sums of independent random variables, the central limit theorem and Poisson processes. The last third of the course will cover basic statistical concepts. Specifically, we will cover point estimation, construction of interval estimates, and one and two sample hypothesis testing. Most (if not all) applications will concern computer science, engineering, operations research, and information technology.
