Student Academic Awards


Every  May the Department of Biology holds it annual awards ceremony.  The ceremony, which is attended by students, families, and faculty offers an opportunity to recognize the academic and civic achievements of a number of exceptional undergraduates. 

Awards Ceremony-May 16, 2002

The following awards were given out this year:

Senior Award: 

This award is given to an outstanding senior majoring in biology, whose academic profile indicates a wide range of interest and ability in biology, and who is interested in a vocation in biology.
This year's recipient: Sheridan MacAuley


Faculty Award: 
This award is given to a senior who has excelled in his/her academic program and contributed significantly to the Department and the University, and has demonstrated a serious interest in a vocation in biology.
This year's recipient:   Dominick Ruggiero

Dominick served as President of the Biology Club.


 Mariann and Bruce Johnson Award: 
This award is bestowed by the Drs. Johnson who graduated from GMU in the early 1970's and have remained generous supporters of the Biology Program.  This award is presented to a senior who has been admitted to a medical, dental, or veterinary school for academic merit, extracurricular activities, community service and character. 

This year's recipient :  Neda Farahmand

Neda will be attending the Pennsylvania College of Optometry this Fall.



Melissa Stanley Medical Technology Award:
This award is given to an outstanding senior majoring in Medical Technology, who has excelled academically and who has demonstrated a high likelihood of contributing to the profession in the future. 

This year's recipient :  Karen Bonnett

Karen is currently completing her degree requirements at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.



Outstanding Biology Graduate Student Teacher:
This award is given to a graduating Biology Masters student.  The award is given in recognition of a record of teaching excellence as evidenced by student teaching evaluations and letters of recommendation of faculty supervisors.

This year's recipient :  Amy Cardwell



Biology Graduates with Honors: 
These students have completed the Department of Biology's Honors Program. They have spent the year reading original research articles and hearing original research presentations, discussing and critically evaluating them.  In recognition of their achievements, these students have graduated "with honors in Biology."
