Malta and its sister islands Gozo and Comino, located at the center of the Mediterranean, occupy a total surface area of 120 square miles. Malta, the largest island, is 19 miles long and 9 miles wide. Malta’s Mediterranean location makes travel to all major European capitals easily accessible. Its is only 60 miles south of Sicily and 180 miles from Tunisia. Due to its strategic location.

The University of Malta traces its origins to the Collegium Melitense founded in 1592. It enjoys an excellent reputation with all the established European Universities and Maltese graduates are accepted every year to postgraduate studies in the world’s leading institutions. The student body numbers 5,000 with a student/teacher ratio of 10:1. The number of foreign students studying full time is close to 170 and they come from all parts of the world including the U.S., Russia, Australia, Canada and China. English is the language of instruction at the University of Malta.
Exchange students may enroll in a variety of undergraduate courses. The University of Malta exchange programme is most suitable to students wanting to follow ARTS subjects (eg: anthropology, Arabic, English, French, Italian, Latin, Linguistics, Near Eastern Studies, archaeology, art history, classical culture and civilization, general communication studies, comparative religion, contemporary Mediterranean studies, history, international relations, European studies, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and theatre studies), and subjects related to Economics, Management, Accountancy, Banking and Finance and Public Policy, as well as Forensic Studies.

Students will have their time-table for credits confirmed once they arrive in Malta. Students are advised to have additional subjects to take in mind, just in case the ones they choose clash with other lectures.
Students are housed at the University Residence in Lija, located on extensive private grounds within walking distance of the center of this village. There is transport available directly from the University Residence to the University of Malta at different times. The University Residence offers a choice of accommodation and has its own swimming pool. This program is open to Mason students ONLY. Students must be at least a second semester sophomoreat the time of departure and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Students should not study abroad the last semester of their senior year if they plan to graduate on time.

If a student applies and is accepted into the direct exchange program and then drops out of the program, they are still responsible for paying the $300 administrative fee to CGE.

Together with the application students have to submit the Health information, a current transcript (original) as well as an official letter of recommendation from your program officer to study as an exchange student at the University of Malta.
