May 20 - June 19, 2008
If you are looking to travel half-way around the world this summer in terms of experiencing a different culture, making new friends, learning the history of a country and what it means to work in grassroots peacebuilding with local and international peace activists; and exploring the beauty and wonders of its natural resources, this trip is for you. Known as the Pearl of the Orient, the Philippines has 7, 107 islands and nearly 90 languages and dialects.
During this trip, students will have the opportunity to attend the 2008 Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute and learn new knowledge and skills in grassroots peacebuilding and establish social network with peace activists from around the world. They will visit local communities in different parts of the country and stay with host families. While experiencing the richness of Philippine culture: food, tradition, beliefs and practices, students will also savor the beauty and wonders of its natural resources: marine life, beaches, endangered animal species, visit to Taal volcano, Apo Island and the Chocolate hills, known as one of the wonders of the world. The trip will cover four major cities, namely: Manila, Davao, Tagbilaran and Dumaguete, respectively.
