tHIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT
Dates July 27 - August 11, 2008
Syria has been at the crossroads, and very much a part, of civilizational development and intrigue. Lodged in the cradle of civilization, this old country is re-emerging as a pivotal player in the region. It lies at the intersection of various conflicts, including the “War on Terror,” the Arab-Israeli conflict, the war in Iraq, and an impending US conflict with Iran. Visiting and studying Syria is akin to being thrown into in a whirlpool of intellectual, cultural, political, and historical excitement that is belied by the stable aura of its ancient cities and historical structures. Boasting an increasingly dynamic social and public life, Syria is often presented as an enigma, a place of seeming contradiction between tradition and modernity, war and peace, autocracy and consent, Islamism and secularism.
This study abroad course will introduce students to what is purported to be a puzzling enigma that is increasingly considered a key to Middle East peace and stability. Students will be taken simultaneously on a cultural, geographic, and historical journey that explores the essential elements of Syria’s society and politics. The trip will involve a wide-range of activities ranging from visiting research centers and academic institutions, to meeting with prominent speakers, leaders, and academics, and, finally, to visiting various historical and “pop-culture” venues that have political, artistic, and historical salience. The course will also involve an audio-visual component, so students are encouraged to bring along either a camera or a video camera, whatever is preferred.
