May 30 - June 15, 2008
This course focuses on the interrelated themes of human rights (particularly women's and children's rights); sustainable human, social, economic, political, and community development; intrafamilal, gender-based, and community violence; poverty; and health and social services. Students will critically examine policies and programs related to these themes and their implementation. This field-based seminar will combine lectures and active learning exercises, reading and written assignments, videos, individual and panel guest presentations, and site visits to governmental and nongovernmental organizations across levels from community-based grass roots to national and international organizations.
Examples of the kinds of site visits to be incorporated into this course include the following: the Inter-American Institute for Human Rights; the National Institute on Women; the government agency responsible for protecting the human rights of children (Patronato Nacional de la Infancia) and one of its shelters; nongovernmental organizations working at grassroots level to empower and realize the human rights of women and children; primary health care programs; agriexport plantations to understand the impact of globalization of the economy and sustainable development; communities being impacted by tourism.
