heroines who were so active and effective during the difficult war years. Samuel is currently the interna- tional consultant at the Evaluation and Strategic Coordination Unit of the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

Before his presentation Samuel explained how the war interfered in his economic studies and prospective banking career, and how it led him to found the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), the largest network of peacebuilding organizations in Africa.

He related his unforgettable experience with a starving 6 year old child during the war, when the people in the whole area around West Point, Monrovia (Liberia) had no food for a long period of time. He said that it was important for the international community to understand why so many states in Africa were collapsing, and why interaction between the state and civil society had to be supported.

Sam stressed the need for the UN to develop new indicators for post-Sam Doe & Marc Gopinconflict peacebuilding. Among other things, he expressed the view that the West’s social political model did not necessarily fit in other regions, such as Africa, and that any new political order had to take account of the region’s own reality.
