The Self-Help Resource Library is a service of CAPS

The Self-Help Resource Library provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Learning Services media lab during the hours the lab is open. Faculty and staff at Mason may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent or otherwise available to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Body Image Therapy: A Program for Self-Directed Change (47-60 min.*)
This 4 tape series provides information on various concepts of body image, body-image development, psycho-social dysfunctional deviations from normal appearance, and methods of facilitating body image change. (audio)

Body Image: Let’s Get Real (48min.*)
This program explores the unhealthy influence that media, peer pressure, and family opinions can have on adolescents’ perceptions of their bodies. Individual testimony on media stereotyping, eating disorders, self-esteem, balanced nutrition, and sexuality provides a candid overview of the relationship between body image and self-identity, while suggesting healthy ways to improve self-image. Perfect Body (14 min.*)
This tape explores some of the current cultural messages and personal pressures that entice women to strive for an unrealistic body weight. Four college women share their experiences. (video)

Transforming Body Image (90 min.*)
This two-tape program offers women exercises and discussion with the consistent message: You can learn to love your body. (video)

The Worried Well: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (15 min.*)
When body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) afflicts people, they become obsessed with the idea of drastically and constantly altering their appearance. Two apparently normal, attractive women discuss their experiences with BDD, and an expert attempts to unravel the mysteries behind this unusual condition. (video)
