The Self-Help Resource Library is a service of CAPS

The Self-Help Resource Library provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Learning Services media lab during the hours the lab is open. Faculty and staff at Mason may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent or otherwise available to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Couple Skills: Making Your Relationship Work (14-20 min.*)
This 6-tape series covers such topics as listening skills, expressing feelings, speaking in clear messages, negotiating to resolve difficult conflicts, taking a time out when angry, and coping with an angry partner. (audio)

Interpersonal Communication Skills (20-30 min.)
Ineffective communication can lead to distrust or misunderstanding. These 6 tapes will help you learn to communicate more effectively with the people in your life by listening more attentively, facilitating self-disclosure by others and by yourself, confronting others and coping with conflict. The Art of Listening (27 min.*)

This cleverly-produced video, with fun and interesting clips, presents listening as a skill and teaches practical techniques. It reviews the 7 Laws of Good Listening" such as finding interest in the other person, listening to what people mean between the lines and being aware of filters that tune out what others are saying. (Video)

High-Impact Communication Skills (66-86 min.)
This two-video series will show you how to present your ideas more clearly, accurately and persuasively in today's intensively interactive workplace. It will help you head off conflicts and resolve those that do occur. As you become a stronger communicator, your self-esteem will grow and others will respond to you more positively. (video)

Intimacy Through Better Communication Skills (45 min.*)
This video will help couples improve their communication skills. It presents such typical communication problems as arguing, withdrawing, blaming, and shrugging, and shows techniques for better communicating between any two people. (video)
