Depression


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Coping with Depression (60 min.)
Incorporate into your life successful strategies to keep depressive episodes at bay. This video validates the feelings of people with depression and encourages a program of simple yet effective self-help techniques. (video)
Depression and Anxiety Management (90 min.)
Specific, practical tools for reducing symptoms of either anxiety or depression. In these two tapes, learn about available treatments for these common problems. (audio)

Faces of Depression (28 min.)
In this unique program presented by the National Public Education Campaign on Clinical Depression, sponsored by the National Mental Health Association, patients share their inspirational stories of struggle and triumph over depression. (video)

Learned Optimism (90 min.)
In this tape based on the book, Dr. Seligman outlines easy-to-understand techniques that help people rise above pessimism and the depression that accompanies negative thoughts. Learned Optimism assesses your present levels of optimism and pessimism, and provides techniques to transform negative thoughts. (audio & book)
Moving Back into the Light (15 min.*)
This video presents important information about major depression and its treatment, and encourages those who are depressed to seek medical help. The importance of compliance with the prescribed treatment regimen is also emphasized. (video)
Suicide Survivors (26 min.*)
This program explores the needs of people who have lost family or friends to suicide and the role of support groups in helping survivors cope with the grief process. (video)
Unmasking Depression (28 min.*)
This program follows the lives of four adults suffering from depression, the most common mental illness in our society. They discuss their fears and emotional pain as well as thoughts of suicide. (video)
When the Blues Won't Go Away: Women and Depression (28 min.*)
This video explores the incidence of depression among women, its possible causes, and treatment options. (video)
