Diversity

The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.
African-American History Series (own pace)
The African-American History assessment tests students' knowledge of Ancient African and African-American history. The accompanying interactive CD Rom gives a compelling history of Africans and Africans of the diaspora. (CD Rom) 		Challenge Bigotry (45 min.)
The intent of this video and accompanying booklet is to provide gay, lesbian, and bisexual campus and community groups an opportunity to start or improve a speakers panel program. In addition, it provides sample panel discussions on this controversial topic. (video)
Cold Water (48 min.*)
An examination of the inter-cultural adjustment process for international students. The video explains how American values may conflict with foreign values. (video) 		Facing Differences: Living Together on Campus (11 min.*)
This program addresses typical incidents of public expression and overt acts of prejudice on college campuses. Racial, religious, ethnic, and sexual orientation diversities are explored. (video)
Growing Up Gay and Lesbian (57 min.*)
This video provides a look at the challenges of growing up gay in a heterosexual world that tackles the issues of self-acceptance and coming out to family and peers. (video) 		R.A.C.E. (45 min.)
The R.A.C.E. (Racial Attitudes and Consciousness Exam), a 1989 television special hosted by Bryant Gumbel, provides you with an opportunity to examine your attitudes and values regarding other racial groups. (video)
Racism 101 (58 min.*)
This video tracks the disturbing increase of racism on campuses across the country. It reveals an unsettling return to the kind of racial prejudice that flared during the early days of the civil rights movement. (video) 		Racism in America (26 min*.)
A discussion between members of various groups on the issues of contemporary racism and the racism of the 1960's. This video is for people who prefer to hear all sides of an issue and formulate their own opinions. (video)
What's on the Midterm, Dr. Brown? & Other Scenes from America (31 min.)
A demonstration of different aspects of American university culture and the way they may vary from other educational systems. (video)		 Still Burning: Confronting Ethnoviolence on Campus (20 min.)
