Memory


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Memory: Fabric of the Mind (28 min.)
What kind of brain chemistry can explain memory? Are different types of memory located in different areas of the brain? What is the process of forgetting? Is it possible to improve memory? This program seeks answers to these and other fascinating questions about memory at several internationally renowned memory research labs. (video)

The Study of Memory (74 min.)
This program introduces the basic terms used in the study of memory -- encoding, storage and retrieval -- and looks briefly at historical ideas about memory. Modern theories are explained using diagrams and real-life examples, and the program discusses current research in the area of everyday memory. The reasons for forgetting are explored and the biological basis of memory outlined. In addition, the program examines ways of improving memory, and eight exercises including memory tests and a video clip of a robbery to test recall for eyewitness testimony. (video)
Power Memory (10-30 min. ea.*)
Using the techniques in this 6-tape series, you'll learn simple and proven memory techniques to remember names, formulas, phone numbers, and other important information. (audio)
