Note-Taking


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Lecture Note-Taking (27 min.*)
This video can provide systematic solutions to taking copious lecture notes only to later find them unsatisfactory for recalling the central points and key issues for exam preparation. This video introduces the Cornell method of note taking and presents an easy-to-implement plan for assuring reliably accurate, effective notes and efficient study strategies. (video)
Listening & Note-Taking (50 min. ea.*)
Learn how to listen actively and take good notes in class. This 6-tape program covers such topics as listening for main ideas and details, methods for taking notes, and using your notes to prepare for tests. (audio)
Note Taking (90 min.*)
The skills students need to effectively record and learn information presented in class are outlined in this program. (video)
Taking Notes Without Falling Asleep (30 min.*)
This video examines critical listening skills, outline techniques and organizational techniques to increase understanding of lectures and reading. (video)
