Self-Discovery


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Controlling Your Dreams: How to Master Your Dreams (60 min.)
This tape will explore ways that lucid dreams can help you to overcome your fears, resolve emotional conflicts and learn to apply insights that you've gained in you dreams to your waking life. (audio)
Healing the Mind (58 min. ea)
This series features new insights into mind-body connections by scientists, physicians and patients on 'sickness' and 'health.' Programs include -- The Mind Body Connection, The Mystery of Chi, Healing from Within, The Art of Healing, and Wounded Healers. (video)
Journal Tape (80 min.*)
A personal journal can be most powerful and rewarding self-discovery tool. The problem has often been getting started. This tape provides some useful methods to help you start and stick with the journal writing habit. (audio)
Multimedia Personal Development (CD Rom)
Psycho-Geometrics (2 hr.)
This entertaining 2-video series will keep you thinking, chuckling and learning as you explore the 'geometry' of the personality. Discover and associate your shape personality to handle situations at the workplace and with other people who are different shapes. (video)
Road Less Traveled (90 min. ea)
In this series, Dr. M. Scott Peck reads from his book The Road Less Traveled. These four tapes cover issues of self-discipline, love, religion and grace, and sexuality and spirituality. Learn to examine and strengthen your values and relationships through emotional and spiritual growth. (audio)
Self-Counseling for Growth and Empowerment (60 min.)
Self-hypnosis exercises with practical skills for making desired changes. Specific attention given to overcoming physical, emotional and mental blocks. (audio)
Smart Risk Taking (28 min.)
Learn how to identify your strengths and weaknesses, balance risk with potential rewards and overcome conscious barriers that may block your path to personal and professional success. (video)

Values (30 min.*)
Review life and work values. Several typical adults reveal what they value and why. (video)

Wellness: A Commitment to Whole Person Excellence (30 min.)
Explore lifestyle benefits in the areas of physical wellness, stress management and emotional well-being, nutrition, environmental sensitivity. The emphasis is on positive self-care and enhancing the quality of life in the long term. (video)

When Bad Things Happen to Good People (60 min.)
Dr. Harold S. Kushner powerfully presents a source of comfort and insight for anyone confronted by tragedy and suffering. Kushner's answers are practical as well as theological, offering compassionate direction for those in pain. (video)
Your Mythic Journey (60 min.*)
Examines the myths we live in our daily lives and the importance of telling our personal stories as a way of self-understanding. (video)
