Sexual Abuse


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

Beginning to Heal (own pace)
This is an easy to read step-by step introduction to healing from child sexual abuse. (book)
Courage to Heal (45 min. ea)
Ellen Bass and Laura Davis weave personal experience, professional knowledge, and moving stories and reflections from survivors, to tell the survivor how to come to terms with the past while moving powerfully into the future. These tapes are a comprehensive guide that offers encouragement to the woman sexually abused as a child and to those who care about her. These tapes should be used in consultation with a counselor. Courage to Heal Workbook: For Men & Women Survivors of Sexual Assault (own pace)
This workbook helps men and women heal from the effects of sexual abuse. With it's checklists, open-ended questions, writing exercises, art projects and activities, the Courage to Heal Workbook takes the survivor step-by-step through key aspects of the healing process. (book)
Healing Sexual Abuse: The Recovery Process (60 min.)
This video is an empowering journey through the recovery and healing process for survivors of sexual abuse. In it, survivors tell their own stories of what happened and how they successfully put those events behind them. (This tape should be used in consultation with a counselor.) (video)
Victims No Longer (own pace)
Victims No More provides hope to men who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse. It will identify and validate childhood experiences, explore strategies of survival and healing, and help work through issues such as trust, intimacy, and sexuality. (book)
