Study Skills


The Self-Development Center provides a media library of personal growth and academic skills programs available to students, faculty, and staff at George Mason University. Media programs may be used in the Self-Develoipment Center during the hours the Center is open. Faculty and staff at GMU may check out programs overnight or over a weekend. Students may check out programs to use for classroom or group presentations. These programs are not for sale or rent to persons outside of the University. If the program is marked with an asterisk (*), ask the receptionist for the handout or written materials that accompany it.

How to Study in College (own pace)
How to Study in College is brimming with exciting techniques, based on widely tested educational and learning theory -- but this book is written in conversational tone so that reading it will be like having a sincere, person-to-person chat. (book)
Introduction to Effective Study Methods: A Modular Approach (own pace)
This program integrates two formats, instructional technology and classroom learning, to teach study skills. A video and student workbook provide everything you need to discover how you can learn more efficiently and effectively. (video)
Multimedia Study Skills (own pace)
This program on study skills and test preparation provides video clips, colorful screens and the power of interaction. (CD Rom)
Techniques of Study (20-30 min.*)
Twelve lessons are reviewed in this 3-part series, introducing the SQ3R method, providing you with practice sessions, examining how to set up a study schedule, how to listen well, take good notes, and take an exam. (audio)
