Welcome!  CAPS provides in-person and virtual, free and confidential, mental health services for enrolled students.  When a student’s needs require a different level of care, CAPS works with students to transition care to community providers. If a student is currently seeing a professional in the community for counseling and can continue to work with them, we encourage the student to continue care with their current provider. If you are interested in connecting with a provider in the community, please visit our Find a Community Provider page for our database of community providers.

Do you want to know more about our team of mental health professionals? Please take a look at our staff directory to learn more about us!

Do you want to get started with counseling or speak with a counselor about your needs? Please come to our office located in Student Union Building 1 (SUB 1), Suite 3129. If you are unable to come to our office, please call us at 703-993-2380. Our hours are:

Monday 9:00am to 4:30pm
Tuesday 9:00am to 4:30pm
Wednesday  12:30pm to 4:30pm
Thursday 9:00am to 4:30pm
Friday  9:00am to 4:30pm

(Limited evening hours by appointment)

We offer in person and virtual appointments for our Mason Square campus, and virtual appointments for our Science & Technology and Smithsonian Mason Conservation campuses. Students on those campuses may call or come to CAPS in person, on the Fairfax Campus, to schedule.

For mental health crises when we are closed, please call CAPS at 703-993-2380 and select option 1, to connect with an after-hours crisis counselor. For emergencies, please call 911, Mason Police at 703-993-2810, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Pledge of Support

At Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), we recognize that incidents of racism both within our campus community and outside of it can significantly impact the emotional well-being of our community members, particularly people of color. We acknowledge the significant pain that race-related aggression activates and the reality of racial trauma. We understand the ways in which power, privilege, and oppression can inflict hurt onto members of the Mason community.

At CAPS, we understand that disclosure of an identity, namely being undocumented, is a process of trust-building and is not required to receive services, attend an event, or seek support from us. CAPS will never disclose a student’s legal status without their written permission.

It is our mission to support members of the Mason community by creating a safe, affirming and inclusive environment that embraces diversity and honors the intersecting identities of everyone on our campus. CAPS provides a confidential space where students may seek support and process their feelings and reactions.
